The much-discussed potential trade of Branden Albert from the Chiefs to the Dolphins doesn’t appear likely at the price Albert is currently seeking.

Although the Chiefs and Dolphins can probably agree on compensation — the Dolphins sending a second-round pick to Kansas City — the hangup is that Albert wants the kind of money that the Dolphins aren’t willing to spend. Specifically, according to Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports, Albert wants between $8 million and $9 million a year on a long-term deal.

In other words, Albert is looking for the same kind of contract that left tackle Jake Long got from the Rams — the very contract the Dolphins wouldn’t give Long, which is why he left Miami for St. Louis.

If the Dolphins weren’t willing to pay Long that kind of money, it’s hard to see why they’d be willing to give up a second-round draft pick for the privilege of paying Albert that kind of money. So the Dolphins may need to look elsewhere for a left tackle. And Albert may have to settle for playing this season for the Chiefs, making $9.8 million, and hitting free agency next year.

They could have a "we'll trade you if you and the Dolphins can work out an extension" kind of deal...where the Dolphins are low balling him as a favor to the Chiefs.

No I don't think so. Another way of looking at it in that scenario is them wanting to trade all the way up to #1 to take Joekel who Sherman recruited to A & M. It may not be likely but its something they have the time to explore

Trade talks between the Kansas City Chiefs and Miami Dolphins for Branden Albert remain ongoing, but there's a sticking point in negotiations.


Although NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reported that the Dolphins are willing to give Albert a long-term contract extension once a trade is agreed upon, the left tackle's demands are higher than the four-year, $34 million contract that offensive tackle Jake Long received from the St. Louis Rams.
The Albert trade will only go down if Albert's asking price "comes down significantly," reported Yahoo! Sports' Jason Cole on Sunday.

While Long is a major injury risk, Albert has battled back from issues of his own of late. If Dolphins general manager Jeff Ireland declined to match the Rams' offer for Long, it stands to reason that he would balk at Albert's demands of $8 million to $9 million annually.

The trade hinges, then, on Albert's willingness to gamble on his 2013 campaign. He can settle for the Dolphins' best offer now, or bank on staying injury-free and productive in a contract season.
