***OFFICIAL*** 2013 STL Cardinals Thread

From Bernie's column:

People have asked me why we’re not more emotional,” Matheny said in his office after Sunday’s game. “They say that we look subdued, always intense. That our actions are methodical, robotic at times. That’s what got us here. This isn’t the time to change it.”

It’s hard to argue with the manager’s assessment. The Cardinals finished with 97 victories, most by a Cards team since 2005, and tied with Boston for No. 1 in the majors this year.

Their 54-27 showing at Busch Stadium matches the 1985 team for the best single-season home winning percentage (.667) by the Cardinals since 1944.

A postseason theme has emerged, and it echoes the mantra that surfaced before the start of 2013: remember the fall of 2012. Remember falling to San Francisco in the NLCS.

The Cardinals’ veterans still haven’t forgotten. They still aren’t over it. It’s why Matheny resists GM John Mozeliak’s urgings to smile and put on a happier face.

Here's the most impressive aspect of the Cardinals' division championship: they prevailed over two other outstanding teams, Pittsburgh and Cincinnati.

The 97-win Cardinals were better this year (regular season) than they were in 2011, when they won 90 games, and 2012, when they won 88.
Here are a few numbers that help put the Cardinals' Central title and No. 1 NL seed in perspective:

* Since MLB switched to a three-division format in each league in 1994, this was only the sixth time that a division had three 90-plus win teams. St. Louis won 97, Pittsburgh 94, and Cincinnati 90.
* Since the format change, this was only the second time that an NL division had three 90-win teams. In 2002 the NL West had Arizona (98 wins), San Francisco (95) and Los Angeles (92).
* The 2013 Cardinals faced more esteemed and difficult competition at the top of the division than any of the division-winning teams managed by Tony La Russa.

The Pirates were hardly pushovers; the Cardinals had to work like mad and kick in with a strong finish to put the division away, and didn't clinch until Game No. 160.

The Cardinals went 9-10 against Pittsburgh this season and were 11-8 vs. Cincinnati.

The Cardinals won only three of 10 games at PNC Park in Pittsburgh and split the 10 games at Cincinnati. The Cardinals were 6-3 against both teams at Busch Stadium.

The Cardinals (1st), Pirates (3rd) and Reds (5th) ranked among the top five in wins in the NL. The three teams were among the top 11 in wins in MLB. All three teams finished in the top five in the majors for best overall ERA, and each were in the top five MLB for best starting-pitching ERA.

The original purpose to this piece was to point out that the Cardinals managed to finish with the league's best record while competing in a division that had three 90-win teams for only the second time in the last 19 years of National League baseball.

The Cardinals really earned this.
Thanks for reading ...
— Bernie

Wow. Just a horrible call. Horrible.

Cuzzi just lives to **** this team over. I've never seen anything like this. Worse than Joey Crawford v. Spurs.

If I had a gun with one bullet and Cuzzi was in a locked room I'd take the damned bullet out and pistol whip him to death

We have better pitchers than westbrook now. Martinez for one. He's up to 91 pitches now.

We just haven't looked good for the last 3 games. Seems like they are lethargic or have a hangover from the Reds series.

I'm actually the one who posted the Martinez pitch #

I'll give you the hangover for the Dillon Gee game, but they just faced Matt Harvey and Fernandez. Those guys are really damned good. Maybe they are hungover, but good pitchers who are on can carve up any lineup.

You also have to consider that Miller, Wacha, Lyons, Martinez, et. al. aren't used to throwing 200 innings. Hell, they'll cap Wacha somewhere around 150. Although Westbrook is nowhere near our most talented pitcher, we desperately need those innings

Also, why are they stretching Martinez out? Are they intending to bring him up soon?

He's worth a hell of a lot more as a starter than a reliever. Have him learn how to start in the minors. When rosters expand we can call him up and have another power arm out of the pen, then give him a legit shot to earn a spot in the rotation in ST next year.

Wacha, Lyons, Miller all have hard or soft innings limits on them. Don't know or at least they haven't announced how they are going to handle the issue. I hope they just don;t shut them down at the end of the year ala Strausberg.

I'm sure they're planning to do the same with Wacha, which begs the question, who loses a spot in the rotation next year?

Wainwright, Miller, and Lynn are probably locks at this point. Do you not bring Westbrook back and go with Wacha and Martinez? Like to have a lefty in there, where does Garcia fit? They have talked about stretching Kelly and Rosenthal out as well, where do they fit?

I'm wondering if they're thinking about moving one of the pitchers for something.

Marlins hitter was bunting. He offered at the pitch, and it glanced off of wood, at least partially, but nevertheless, he offered at it. Cuzzi originally says that he offered at it. Marlins manager comes out and the batter shows his hand and Cuzzi changes his mind.

Runner then scores on the Stanon double that provides the margin of victory.

In the 9th Adams is up with a 2-2 count. Cishek throws a pitch low and away that was a ball all night. Cuzzi rings him up.

We be fukt.

Wacha got sent back down today, If I read that correctly.

I don't imagine we'll see him back until September, same with Martinez.

Well, it was Cuzzi none the less, IIRC, he threw Edmonds out in the 05 NLCS, so we don't exactly jive.

Garcia doesn't fit anywhere. He had shoulder surgery. He's done. Forget that he even exists.

They probably need an innings eater. You can't count on Wacha and Martinez both throwing 200+ so early into their careers.

They obviously realize that they have no lefty pitching. That's why they went after Gonzalez w/ their first pick, and they doubled down over the long term w/ Kaminski.

Thats what I'm thinking about Garcia as well. IMO, shoulder has become a bigger problem than elbow these days anyway.

Gonzalez and/or Kaminski won't likely be with the big club by next year, we need a lefty in there somewhere. It wouldn't be a bad idea to have a lefty be your innings eater.
