Honor thy Father

35ish years ago, my Dad bought me my first gun. It's a breakdown 20 gauge single shot. He took me to the junk yard and threw cans in the air for me to shoot. When I would hit the target he would howl with joy. He took me on my first deer hunt with the same gun. I killed a doe. He pointed out the fact that I hit her directly in the heart. He made me gut her (he helped a lot). It was gross. He convinved me that I was a great hunter. I've hunted with that gun for many, many years and killed numerous deer, dove, squirrels and quail. It is now one of my prize possessions. I only get to see my Dad twice a year now, Easter and deer season. I love my Dad. This evening, I'm missing him. Let's hear a story about your Dad.

I've never got to spend a lot of time with my dad. He traveled a lot growing up. We played golf from time to time, but maybe once or twice a month. For the past couple years, we've gotten to spend a lot more time together working on my house.

He works a lot and works hard, so this year, I said come hell or high water, he's going to relax and play some golf with me. I bought him a membership at the local course. We've golfed a lot together this year. Been great spending some time with him as he and I get older.

Ok.. you wanted a story about my dad. here you go.
My dad is a vietnam vet. As far as I know he came home kind of in a bad way. When my mom was pregnant with my in 1971 he hit her more than once and 5 days after I was born in Feb of 1972 he left. He called me once in 1984, but it was worthless. He is currently well over 20,000.00 in child support debt but has everything in his current wife's name. Thankfully in 1996 my mom met a guy who was a good guy all around and they married in 1997. So.. to my biological father I say F*** You, to my step dad who is a retired marine and a vietnam vet. I say happy fathers day.

Do we have the same father????

I shit you not... almost the same story for me, just change the years a bit. Only difference is that he beat me, we left when I was 4, and he died of cancer in 1998.

PR.. I'm sorry your dad was a piece of ****, too. My "dad" effed my mom up real bad for a few years, but she was a better person for it and now lives in Orlando, married to a good guy and has just about everything she wants.

The day after Thanksgiving in 1971 my father was getting ready to go to his office. He headed up the architectural division of an engineering firm. I loved going there to look at the models and the floorplans, and listen to the guys who worked there talking about their projects.

Anyway, I asked if I could go to the office with him that day since school was out, but my father said no. That led to us getting angry with each other, and we parted that day on less than friendly terms.

Late that night we got a call informing us that he'd pulled over to the side of the road and that he was found dead in his car.

I had two regrets that took me a while to work out. First, that our last words were words of anger. Second, that if I had been with him, I might have been able to save his life. I was 12 years old. He was 43.

I have some really great memories of him as well, but that's my most important memory. Even with his death the guy was still teaching me.

Wow. That would've been tough.

You are right, it was his loss. He never got to see me play my 1st little league baseball game. He never got to see me line up in my 1st High school football game, he never got to sit and watch me do something he didn't do which was go to and graduate from college. But it is what it is and there's nothing that can be done to change that. Sounds like your dad is a good guy, I am sure he knows you think it.

I have made a point to make sure he's aware that I am proud he's my Dad. We do disagree on things, and sometimes our discussions become quite heated. When we both calm down, he kisses me on the cheek, I kiss him on the cheek and we go outside and count his cattle.

My dad was the first one to teach me how to fish with a fly rod. He wasn't an expert by any means, but when the mayflies would start falling on our lake, he'd break out our shabby old rods, rig 'em out, and take us out for some hot panfish action on popping bugs and bream killers.

The rest of the family all made fun of me, because I started using the flyrod year 'round, neglecting our bait casters and spinning reels. My dad never joined in the familial ribbing, though. He'd always get a little grin of satisfaction when I'd start talking flyfishing with him because I'd really taken something he'd taught me to heart. When my brothers were reeling in lunker bass and I was catching miniscule panfish, they'd shout out that they needed me to catch them some bait. On the beach, they'd easily cast from the sand, while I waded out, battling the surf, and struggled against wind and waves just to get off a cast while bouncing to keep my head afloat. My dad, though, always seemed to understand.

On dad's last trip to Nicaragua, he'd bought some convertible travel rods that could switch from fly rod setup to spinning rod. The fateful morning they'd set out on a fishing trip in an overcrowded panga. From the pictures that were rescued from a digital camera as well as the accounts of the survivors, we know that they had an absolutely phenomenal morning of fishing before tragedy struck in the afternoon. I like to think that dad caught a few of those fish using his flyrod set up.

I miss you dad, but I know you're watching and smiling every time I hit the water.

That's what I'm talkin' about. When my Dad took me on my first deer hunt, I suspect he was as nervous as me because I doubt he'd done much deer hunting. But to me, he was an expert. When we field dressed my deer, he was probably figuring it out as he went along. But, he figured it out. I was so impressed with his expertise.

I could go about 100 pages on and on my dad. There was a crazy moment this last weekend. My friend got a couple weeks off back from iraq. I met up with him at the ball park. The guy gets drunk like you probably should when you come back for a couple days. He is lit up and was little pissed about the memorial day at the K. I imagine it is emotional for someone who has came back from iraq seeing people cheer for fireworks while we are supposed to be remembering the fallen ones. Anyway this guy was really drunk but his dad was talking to him as if he was sober. I thought it was neat to see a father talking to him drunk sober the same way given him advice.
