If a 9 game conference schedule can be used as a carrot for ESPN, it will be used. The idea has been floated on a few SEC sites that are connected in the conference, particularly Mr. SEC. More SEC games = more money. It isn't difficult to understand.
You gotta balance that out with the loss of a home game every other year. More conference games does not = only more money, its got to net out ahead after losing tickets, concessions, etc from one fewer game every couple years.

more conference games also makes it more difficult to maintain conference's strength of schedule, which could trump anything else. A conference SOS becomes rated higher than other conferences only through how they do in non-conference games. If you have few non-conference games, you've got a smaller margin of error for the Kentucky's and Vandy's of the world.

Alabama/Tennessee
Auburn/Georgia
Arkansas/South Carolina
LSU/Florida
Mississippi/Vanderbilt
Mississippi St/North Carolina
Missouri/Kentucky
Texas A&M/Virginia Tech
That isn't a conference. You can't go six years without playing a team in your own conference.

Can someone please explain to me why all the talking heads seem to think a conference can't have an odd # of teams? They keep saying Big 12 has to got to 12, or 14, or 16. The Big 10 had 11 teams for a long time, they did just fine. I find it odd why it makes any difference

Conference Championship Game

If you have 11 teams, it doesn't really matter. If you have 13 or 15 teams, then some teams will be forced to play more conference games than others, which would obviously be unacceptable.

You rotate every year, you don't play everybody every single year in that format.

I think the Big12 needs to get to 12 and have that Championship game. Thats what really screwed us out of getting more than one BCS Bowl team. I wouldn't mind adding these other teams too... but whispers are that things already are a little rocky in the SEC with 14 teams now.

You must have divisions, and you must play everyone in your division to be allowed to have a conference championship game. If one division has one more team than the other, it is mathematically impossible to do that and have everyone play the same number of conference games.

Outkick the coverage has a gem on the ACC's commissioner.

The ACC's John Swofford is the New Dan Beebe

Article ends with 12 signs that Swofford is losing it, one of which was:

Quote:
10. Swofford had an ACC map drawn that included these teams: South Florida, Cincinnati, Louisville, UConn, and Rutgers.

He emailed it and asked ESPN what their television offer would be for this conference.

Ten minutes later, an ESPN exec wrote back their offer: "LOL."

Scott: The 'Plus-One' Is Back on the Table

Quote:
The Southeastern and Big 12 conferences' announcement Friday of a bowl game between their champions revived the possibility of a "plus-one" title game after the bowls, Pac-12 commissioner Larry Scott told The Wall Street Journal. Scott called Friday's announcement of the new postseason pairing a "game-changer."
Translation: Hey Big 10, PAC 12. Be reasonable. Doesn't matter if the ACC and Big East agrees with you, we're not doing your stupid top-4 champs plan, if one conference has 2 extremely strong teams, they should both have a chance to be included in the playoff.

Scheduling is a bitch with odd number of teams in all sports, it forces alot of the other sports to be looking for OOC games during the middle of season.

Clemson seems to be pushing hard for the Big 12. As I've stated before they are a ways down my list of desirable schools but I guess that running down the hill into football games is okay.

Clemson is #3 on my list, behind Notre Dame and Florida State. I'd take any one of those 3, as soon as they said yes, without any thought or regard on whether I could get anyone else for #12, though Clemson would probably shake FSU loose if they are still hesitant.

Clemson gets big, big ratings in football, and they even support their basketball team decently. This isn't like North Carolina which is split 3 ways and apathetic about football, or the northeast which are pro towns that don't care about college sports, there are a ton of Clemson fans in South Carolina, and they all watch their Tigers on saturday. That school is worth a lot.
