Shady car dealership practices....

I recently purchased a used car from a dealership, which included a trade-in. Everything seemed to have gone well until about a week afterwards. I got a letter in the mail from the credit union the dealer used to finance the loan and it said I was denied because the "Term requested exceeds limits." They counter offered with a 48 mo loan instead of a 60.

I also noticed in the contract that they slipped in $400 extra in dealership fees. Needless to say I was pissed I didn't notice it before signing, especially considering I believe it was added in the final contract and not the ones I looked at before.

Long story short, could I play hardball and tell them to take out the fees or I'll return the car to them and cancel the deal because the financing fell through? Seems they would be out a lot of time and effort over $400, not to mention the dealership is a three hour drive from here and, from what I have read, the onus is on them to rectify the financing situation.

Perhaps someone who has been in the industry can provide me some feedback. Thanks.

Here is a picture of the contract and the "added" fees. Basically, they put $631.50 over the advertised 249.00.

I dont.

After nearly 17 years in this business, my eyes are already pretty open. I have seen or heard about anything you can imagine.

I did read where Burt said 'most' salesman are bad. I highly disagree. Most salespeople are good, regular people, you just have a couple bad apples that get the most attention.

That being said, whether you are selling cars, or buying cars, remember the golden rule.

Well if lazy, inept, inexperienced, unaware counts as bad you are right.

I guess I see bad as people who are looking to **** someone, dishonest people who get pleasure out of it. Those are much fewer.. and usually they produce, so they keep getting chances when they get busted or **** up.

I'd say 50/50 split. I think there are a lot of fine people that get pressured into doing shitty things by shitty management/ownership.

I am sure he has mellowed over the years. One of the more interesting people from my past. I think I met him at Morse Chevy during his Porsche distruction era, Maybe a couple of dealers back. One of the best "used car guys" I ever met.

I wonder what a day is like as a Dick Smith Ford sales person under Tolbert.....

Isn't it an extremely common scam, that they contact you after the deal and say your "financing fell through" to try to convince you to come in and re-sign the deal at a higher rate?

I wasn't even aware you could close a deal and leave without financing essentially locked in.

Not very often, but I've seen it happen before, anything to get paperwork signed and get a car over the curb, asap

At best the finance mgr believed and hoped the CU would agree to terms

At worst, he knew they wouldnt but wanted baitism driving down the road in his new car anyway... and once the paperwork is signed, finance manager has certain protections

I suspected that was likely it. Financing not secured and eventually falling through seems like it could be a total mess of either trying to unwind the transaction or financing with conditions not agreed to.

It's common to put someone in a vehicle before financing is finalized. BUT it's ALWAYS communicated to the customer. Transparency is the key to good hones car sales.

A good dealership doesn't "scam"

This is a buyers order. But it's suspect to have the extra $$ there without a description. Your contract will have that amount AND what it is for. It has to by law.
