Shooting at Arrowhead- Chiefs player commits suicide

No details yet. Just came across on the news.

edit: Sources say the player is Jovan Belcher. Police have yet to confirm.

An unnamed Kansas City Chiefs player has committed suicide at the team facility and authorities are on the scene, the police confirmed to ESPN on Saturday morning.

Local reports say police are operating with the belief the player fatally shot his girlfriend at a house before driving to Arrowhead Stadium and killing himself at around 8 a.m local time. The Associated Press reported the player's age to be 25.

"We can confirm that there was an incident at Arrowhead earlier this morning," the Chiefs said in a statement. "We are cooperating with authorities in their investigation."

There were no other injuries at the team facility, police said.

The Chiefs (1-10) were preparing to host the Carolina Panthers on Sunday.

The NFL has told the Panthers to travel as planned to Kansas City on Saturday, the Charlotte Observer has reported, citing interim general manager Brandon Beane.

I realize it is still too early but I am just a little bothered by some of what I am reading and witnessing out of the Chiefs organization in regards to this.

If you followed what the WWE did when Chris Benoit did the same thing they completely wiped him from everything. It is like he never existed. Once the details of what he did were known he was publicly condemned and shit on just like he deserved to be. Vince McMahon called him a monster.

The same thing needs to happen to Belcher much like it happened with Benoit, and Paterno.

I have long passed the idiolization of Chiefs players many many years ago.

I dont have feelings for a millionare playing a game offing himself. I just dont.

I do however feel some compassion and sympathy for the women and the child. But this shit happens daily across this country. Where is the outcry and justice for them?

No it's not. Sandusky was a serial pedophile who abused countless boys over a period of decades, and Paterno stood by and did nothing about it for decades.

What Belcher did was horrible, but up until yesterday, what had he done wrong? All these people remember him as a person, a friend, not a killer.

If one of your friends did this, would you just shit all over years of friendship and go piss on his fresh grave?

I don't understand how the fans "don't get it" but I do somewhat understand that his friends and teammates have conflicting emotions less than 40 hours after these incidents occurred.

I think when it's a team sport it's different. I am sure not one of those players or others in that organization condone what he's done. But I also don't think they are going to turn on him because of what he did.

As I said before, I just watched my son's soccer teams try to deal with the sudden and tragic death of one of theirs. I think there are few bonds like teammates who become like family. I completely understand why the Chiefs players want to honor him for the man THEY KNEW not the one he became yesterday.

Well, it's not like it's just some posters here on Chiefsplanet that think it's inappropriate. Chiefs' management/ownership persuaded players not to wear the number on their jerseys because it sent the wrong message. If he was their best bud or whatever, then that' fine, but the organization can't be showing support for a murderer.

And I agree with that. But the people who knew him as a friend are still coming to grips with what happened, and it's going to take more than a day for that to happen.

Remember, he was their buddy for a long time - he's only been a suicidal murderer for a day. I think people should cut them a little slack.

Exactly. They should allow the individual players to do what they feel is appropriate and let them take the responsibility for their actions. The FRANCHISE cannot be seen as 'condoning murder' in any way, shape, or form. Likewise, I think it's wrong for them to act like Belcher's loss is insignificant. The team had a bit more than 24 hours to figure out what was the most respectful approach to all involved while still allowing his friends to honor their fallen teammate. A very delicate situation that I think they've handled rather well.

Another thought, assuming he told them what he'd done, Jovan might have been showing some serious remorse for his actions to Pioli and Crennel. They were not afraid to be near him even though he was apparently distraught and with a gun. I think that speaks volumes on how much they believed Jovan had acted out of character and was of no danger to them.
