Spotify vs. Pandora

Do any of you use Spotify? How is it different than Pandora? I've noticed that people's playlists show on Facebook from Spotify, which I don't necessarily like. Is there a reason to listen to that as opposed to Pandora?

Spotify is terrific. Yes, there are gaps, but not like "Netflix streaming" gaps.

Pandora is alright, I guess. Some people find pandora "stations" that apparently link to excellent music. It's more trial and error and word-of-mouth to find a station that really synchs with your tastes.

I'm lucky. There is an OUTSTANDING radio station in LA. It plays a constant stream of the best music I've heard. Virtually every song is something I haven't heard before and instantly like.

Shazam + Spotify = excellent music listening.

Alot of people say this and I guess I don't get it. All the music is there for you to listen to.

It is like iTunes preloaded with 5.5 million tracks instead of just the tracks you have acquired.

How many devices will Spotify's premium membership support? How many simultaneously? IOW, would one membership cover my whole family or would I need separate memberships for each person?

Spotify is better simply because you can make your own playlists and save it to a cloud for you to take anywhere.

They say up to 3 devices. Though I am not sure that is in effect. I have used it on more than that...though not at the same time I suppose.

So you have to physically go in and choose the songs rather than just select a genre?

You can have an unlimited number of devices linked to Spotify. However:

1.You can only have three devices set up to have files available offline. (My wife and I each have our cell phones set up to be offline devices, for example.)

2. You can only stream (as opposed to playing offline) to one device at a time. (In other words, if I try to play a song on my computer while my wife is listening on hers, it'll cut her off immediately.)

3. You can kinda sorta get around the limitation by having some devices set to work offline. In other words, if one device is playing offline, that won't impact the device that's playing online.

So basically, you can use it for the whole family, but you'll probably run into some conflicts from time to time. We make it work, but more than two people (and especially if you're talking about kids) would probably be a bit tough.

I'm not quite sure what device(s) you're playing with, but it's easiest to figure out what Spotify is meant to do on a computer rather than phone/tablet. If Spotify were Google, their phone apps would still be called "beta."

One of the drawbacks of Spotify is that it's a relatively new outfit, and they have put more emphasis on getting rights to songs rather than on developing the software. Currently, the Android app can't do radio at all. It's supposed to be there for iOS, but I couldn't tell you how. (Probably something like search for the artist first, then look for a radio option.)

Just an FYI how Spotify works:

Firstly, as DaFace said, it's best to start out on an actual computer, not a mobile device. That gets you the full featured interface.

On a mobile device, the only actual music you get without a subscription fee is the "radio" feature. You can look up artists, songs, albums, etc... but you'll only be able to play songs via the radio stream that works pretty much like Pandora. That being said, if you "like" a song, it will automatically add that song into a playlist for you that will show up on your laptop next time. So as you're listening to the Spotify radio song (based on an artist, song, genre), you can like stuff to listen to again later at will when you're back on your laptop.

Now if you choose to subscribe to the service, then the mobile app becomes more "at will" and full featured. It's still not nearly as robust as the computer application, but it's better than just being stuck listening to the pandora-like station stream.

In case anyone's interested, Google just released a direct competitor for Spotify today called "All Access." Free trial here.

Songza, Pandora and iTunes/Spotify are generally three fundamentally different approaches to how you figure out what you're going to listen to next. No reason you can't use all three.

Yeah, I don't even think of Spotify as being in the same category as Songza. The way I look at it...

Discovery - Pandora, Songza
Purchasing - iTunes, Google Music, Amazon
Streaming - Spotify, Rdio, MOG, Rhapsody, Google All Access, (planned iTunes equivalent)
