Bubba Starling watch

Since the MLB draft is in a week why not? Baseball gurus where do you see Starling getting drafted and what kind of money will be thrown his way? I heard momma Starling wants him to go to school but that could be posturing.

If he performs well in High A, they'd probably at least consider giving him a cup of coffee in AA to wrap up the season and give him his target for 2012.

As it is, he may not play a game for them this season. Then next year he'll probably start in short season rookie ball, make a move to Low A in a couple of months, then high A towards the end of the year if he excels.

Granted, if he struggles (certainly possible for a HS kid), it will all be moot as he wouldn't have advanced rapidly anyway. But if he plays well, the holdout could have the effect of keeping him back a full level.
I just think they'll be incredibly patient with him, and they won't push him much the first year or two.

Starling's performance will drive how rapid his escalation is...

If he goes to low-A next year and destroys it, they'll promote him. Hosmer basically moved through the system in 1.3 years (once he got his eyes fixed).

Certainly possible, given the Gordon mess.

That said, everyone's different. You'll see players lose an edge by being left too long at a lower level and never truly recover (they become complacent; stop learning and start coasting on talent - suddenly they can't flip the switch when they're promoted).

If he earns a promotion - give it to him. But make sure he earns every one of them. That was where the Royals failed Gordon; he never truly earned that final jump up the major leagues and he wasn't prepared for it.

I think Hosmer was more polished and advanced than Bubba. Hosmer played against elite HS competition, Bubba....hasn't. That said, yes, if he tears it up then move him on up. I just hope fans have reasonable expectations. It could easily be four years before he's sniffing the majors, and that doesn't mean he's failed.

I'm excited to see Eiler Hernandez and Bubba come up together through the system. Talk about a couple of stud prospects in your outfield....

You were talking about how he was nothing special because he wasn't a Rivals top 100. If the guy would have played in Florida or Texas he would have been rated in the top 10. Rivals puts a lot of stock into what competition level.

I don't think Starling will ever be an All-Star, not even a major league starter. That is just me going out on a limb and making a prediction so I can bump this thread 5 years from now. Unless I am face down in a ditch with cocaine burnt into my nostrils, if that is the case, somebody do it for me.

That's not really going out on a limb. A lot more guys wash out than become All-Stars. That said, I'd be very surprised if he doesn't become a regular at some point. His defense and speed alone as a CF will get him looks even if he can't hit a curve ball.

You, sir, are reeruned. His ceiling is the highest in this draft. At this point, to believe he wont even be a serviceable major leaguer is just asinine.

For the record: his ceiling, offensively, is Joe Mauer.

Completely agree with his ceiling, in fact, might even be higher as far as power for sure. What about his floor though? He very well might not develop into anywhere near of a player we thought he could be. I think there is a chance he can be Ken Griffey Jr, but I think theres a much better chance he flames out.
