Whitlock: Grow Up, Jared

JASON WHITLOCK COMMENTARY
COMMENTARY
JARED NEEDS TO GROW UP

Luckily there’s time for Jared Allen to calm down, realize he still has a few things to prove and re-think his anger toward Carl Peterson and the Chiefs.

The truth is, Peterson would be foolish to give Allen a lengthy contract extension at this point. In three seasons, Allen has proved to be a good defensive end, a player with the physical potential to be great and the mental capacity to crash and burn.

Nope. You don’t spend two days in jail for multiple DUIs and the first part of the 2007 season probably suspended for the same violations and receive a big contract as a reward.

The Chiefs can’t afford to make those mistakes. Peterson gave party animal Eric Warfield a large contract, and Peterson lived to regret it. There’s no reason to do it again.

Giving Allen a high-tender contract for next season makes perfect sense. It protects the Chiefs and puts a gun to Allen’s head. In 2007, Allen will need to keep his nose clean off the field and put together a blockbuster season on the field if he wants a superstar contract.

Allen will also have time to calm down.

The Chiefs will learn a lot about Allen’s maturity by judging how he comes to grips with the mistakes he’s made and how those self-inflicted wounds cost him money. If Allen never acknowledges that his own mistakes are the reason he can’t get paid after three seasons, then perhaps the Chiefs should gladly let him go after the 2007 season.

You have to remember that Allen’s immaturity is the only reason he played at Idaho State rather than the Pac-10. Allen’s college immaturity stopped him from being an NFL first-round draft pick.

Is Allen growing up? Or is he the same kid who got in trouble in high school?

Beyond a lack of maturity, there are still questions about just how good of a player Allen is. Yes, he’s recorded 27 1/2 sacks in three years. Guess what? During 2000-2002 Eric Hicks recorded 26 1/2 sacks.

Allen’s on-field resume is incomplete. We still need more information. He’s not Dwight Freeney or Jason Taylor or Mike Strahan or Julius Peppers or Trevor Pryce or a handful of other consistent pass-rush playmakers.

If the Chiefs offered Allen what he’s worth right now, Allen is likely to be very insulted. Waiting until next year is the smart thing for the Chiefs and Allen.

The friction between Peterson and Allen illustrates what a difficult offseason it’s going to be for Peterson. The only easy decision he had to make was giving Tony Gonzalez a new contract.

Absolutely everything else — Trent Green-Damon Huard, Larry Johnson, Ty Law, etc. — will be high risk.

Giving L.J. a huge contract extension, which is something Peterson has indicated he’s prepared to do, won’t be popular in the locker room. Some of Allen’s dissatisfaction might be a result of Johnson envy.

Perhaps the only way to lessen the complexity of the situation is to approach the season with the removal of Super Bowl aspirations. If the approach is to build toward a Super Bowl season in 2008, then maybe it becomes easier to let go of some veteran players.

It could be tough for me to muster much emotion either way about what Peterson decides to do this offseason. He has nothing but difficult decisions. It appears he made the right call on Allen.

I honestly don't think much more highly of Allen than I do Eric Hicks at this point. They get their sacks in bunches but disappear at key points and don't dominate against the great teams. He's an OK end but IMO is entirely replaceable. He's also a drunk driver, which makes him a turd in my book...

huh?

Allen has single handedly won us games...St. Louis this year, Washington last year....he had made big plays even in games we lost...Hicks never played the consistent intensity of Allen....

terrible comparison....and Hicks was a FREEWAY against the run, Allen has turned into a fine run stopping DE, he just doesn't get credit for it...

Allen has become a more complete player every year, Hicks was a one-trick pony...

There are very few defensive ends that could produce at the level that Allen has without any credible support from the interior of the DL, and with the secondary the Chiefs have had since he's been here.

If all the players made the effort Allen does, there would be no stopping this team.

Perhaps, his off field antics don't impress me at all. I'm of the opinion he's not built to last. I'd like to see him prove me wrong (and stop drinking and driving too)...

Wonder if Whitlock had to work Long and Hard into the Black of night to Come up with that one?

I love the "drunk driver" stones that get thrown...

I wonder how many people go to Arrowhead on game day, Tailgate, pay Carls $6 beer, drink more while traffic clears out, then get behind a wheel and drive home?

I guess it is only the players that drink and drive huh?
