49ers have completed a trade with the Chiefs for Alex Smith, tho can't be official til March 12. Chiefs really made a commitment to Smith

If I remember right, Brad Johnson was lucky enough to squeak one in there, and Jim Kelly because he was at the helm of a perennial AFC Championship powerhouse if I'm not mistaken, but never won one.

I hope the rules here don't require me to take off my shoes when I sign in, wash my hands after going to the bathroom or excuse myself for farting during conversation. But I don't threaten or get nasty and I figure this is all tongue in cheek and in good fun. I'm guessing most of you guys are 12 years old.

The only general on that SF team was Jim Harbaugh. Alex Smith couldn't get out of his own asshole's way on third down.

Um, I didn't say that at all lol.

What I'm asking is, if you had the choice between two versions of Alex Smith.

1. being a Jim Kelly type championship run where we're winning ~10 games a season, we're in the playoffs, nay, the AFC Championship or even super bowl, and statistically is he is a top 5 guy

or.

2. A mediocre string of seasons where we're close to .500, winning 8 or 9 games a season with a top 12-16ish statline, but ONE year of solid gold performance and a super bowl victory.

Which would you take?

I'm not saying these are the only options, nor that this is what will happen.

I'm simply curious, would the fanbase take 6 seasons of disappointing championship game losses and/or super bowl losses, or would they take 5 seasons of mediocre play, and one super bowl victory?

I'm inclined to believe the fanbase would be split close to 50/50 here. Some just want to know what it is like to root for a team to win the super bowl, some might want to know what it is like to just win, win, win, but never win the big one.

I fail to see how the better QB wouldn't have the "gold" season you're talking about that wins us a Super Bowl.

You're not about to suggest that QBs mired in mediocrity who won Super Bowls like Brad Johnson and Trent Dilfer won it because they had a "solid gold performance," are you? Because neither of them had that kind of season in their respective runs.

A comparison to RG3 was mentioned. He was at times flashy, but he has a bad brain and now he has a bad wheel because of it. He also has an erratic coach. Both of them are why they got beat by the Seahawks and ended their season at home. Rogers was right...the backyard brawler QB is a flash only. When they can't run their game is over. And being able to run doesn't translate into maturity or patience. Take a look at how Colin Kap looked against the Rams, the Seahawks and the Ravens. He was lost. So RG3 plus Shannihan = a serious injury and a season that almost went badly. I'd rather have Alex Smith and Andy Reid. Smart and smart. Only good comes from smart. Running wild will get you an ass kicking eventually. Running wild is not a long term plan.

And why look down the road 7 years? You can't. But this will be an improvement, you have to know it will. And I will bet that Alex drives the playbook with the team. He is a very cerebral dude who will help the Chiefs in more ways that the posters here are expecting.

This is going to be good. Can't wait.

Harbaugh is not a general, he's a cheerleader. A general does not try weak tosses in the redzone at the 5 yard line first and goal when he had Delanie Walker and Frank Gore. The QB is the general. Alex Smith is a game manager remember? Twelve was generous.

Because in the long run, what are we after?

I'd be reluctant to answer that myself, and I'd bet the fanbase was pretty close to a 50/50 split on it.

This is the same "What if" stuff we heard about Cassel for four seasons.

It's not going to happen. The RGIII comparison is made only in terms of a successful and electric rookie year. It has nothing to do with play style, because Geno is a completely different QB.
