****Official **** You Mike Mayock Thread**** (OP UPDATED)

http://m.nfl.com/news/0ap1000000140130/

The Kansas City Chiefs need a quarterback, but there aren't any this season that look like a top-ten talent, much less a No. 1 overall pick.

The way Mike Mayock sees it, the Chiefs should be looking to the offensive line for their first overall pick. And there are only four players worth the No. 1 overall pick in this draft for Kansas City: Alabama guard Chance Warmack, UNC guard Jonathan Cooper, Texas A&M tackle Luke Joekel, or Central Michigan tackle Eric Fisher.

Mayock said on a conference call Monday that some people will say he's crazy to potentially take a guard at No. 1 overall, but Mayock says Warmack is the best player in this draft. So he doesn't see it as crazy at all.

In the end, Mayock believes the pick could come down to Joekel or Warmack. This is a draft where the top-shelf players don't stand apart too much, and there may not be a huge difference between picks 5 and 25. That makes it a tricky spot for the Chiefs.

Don't be surprised if Kansas City builds from the inside out, and finds their quarterback of the future later.

He gives the Chiefs 4 options at #1 and they're all offensive lineman? Go **** yourself bro

@Jacobs71: Here is what Mayock said on #Chiefs pick in full "Well, part of it depends on what they're going to do with free agency and Branden Albert."

@Jacobs71: Mayock:"I think the answer to that, obviously, is going to give you the answer. Sitting where they are, let's face it, they need a QB."

@Jacobs71: Mayock:"We don't know that there are a lot of people who think Geno Smith is in that ballpark."

@Jacobs71: Mayock:"I don't, but there are a lot of people that think he should be considered."

@Jacobs71: Mayock:"When you look at what they're going to do, what are they going to do with Dwayne Bowe?"

@Jacobs71: Mayock:" Whoever the quarterback is, they need a wide receiver. And I think John Dorsey has to be thinking what is the big picture here?"

@Jacobs71: Mayock:"I've got one, and I've got 34. What is the best combination of getting the most value out of that?"

@Jacobs71: Mayock:"And I think that offensive lineman at 1 is the most solid guy they can go with."

@Jacobs71: Mayock:"I don't care whether it's Warmack or Joeckel. People will tell me I'm crazy that a guard can't go No. 1."

@Jacobs71: Mayock:"I think he's the best player in the draft, so I would argue that."

@Jacobs71: Mayock:" But either way, I think they've got to get an offensive lineman and come back at 33 and prepare to go with a QB or WR."

@Jacobs71: When I asked Mayock about who fits Reid's system at QB: " I think Matt Barkley makes a lot of sense."

@Jacobs71: Mayock:" He's a guy as a junior at USC looked so much different than he did this year."

@Jacobs71: Mayock:"With Landry Jones and Tyler Wilson, I think all three of those guys you have to go back and watch junior tape. "

@Jacobs71: Mayock:" So I think Barkley fits what he does. I think Ryan Nassib fits what he does."

@Jacobs71: Mayock:"I think Landry Jones and Tyler Wilson both can fit what he does."

@Jacobs71: Mayock:"So of those, that group of guys of the top seven, eight quarterbacks, I think those are the guys that did it most efficiently."

That's gonna happen when that one QB lasts almost the entire tenure with a team. I guess if all the other QBs Reid drafted turned into probowlers. But he was drafting backups for McNabb. I know this says more about the absolute futility of Chiefs QB drafts, but I can't find a single Chiefs QB draft pick that's as good as four of the QBs Reid has drafted over the years. I like the idea of him picking a QB for us.

Again, I would MUCH prefer to see Reid turn guys like Kolb into a REAL QB rather than a trade piece.

Sure, it's a bonus to get value out of those guys but it would have been REAL VALUE if he actually got them to be GOOD QBs.
I liked what he did there...he got two qbs, coached them up and kept the one with a higher upside and traded the other one for a premium pick and a damn good player.

Which goes to show more that we absolutely have to get this first one right. Then we can start getting backups to flip for picks.

Unfortunately, Reid is, for me, a victim of circumstance, for the very reasons you state above.

I like the idea of Reid picking a QB for my team, if I had to pick one guy.

However, my team is the CHIEFS and I don't trust them to EVER do the right thing. They've been doing the wrong thing for 30 years. Andy Reid is going to have to prove it to me that he's different.

IIRC, Dorsey said they want the roster set when they go to the combine, so I'd think we might be hearing some news about our FA's this week.

Footwork. Nassib and Glennon (and Barkley but he won't throw) all have years of experience in the 3,5,7 step drop whereas Geno has had a month to refine his footwork.

Barkley has played in the WCO for 4 years. He knows all the terminology, designs, etc. I think he will easily impress the most in football knowledge to Reid in the interviews since we will run the WCO.

With Mayock throwing out not 1, but 2 guards as the potential pick, I think you may be right.

With the many years football fans have seen the draft play out you'd believe that the 1st rule in the draft season is not to believe a word from FO personnel evaluators or the talking heads.

JFC O.city these guys have been in the WCO for YEARS. You think Geno is gonna have better footwork in the 3,5,7 drop under center than them?

You think he knows more about a scheme he has never played in over a QB that has played in it for 4 years?

Now you're just being a homer.
