Do you return your shopping cart?

Last night at the grocery store I see a lady leave her shopping cart in the middle of the parking lot. The worst part about it is that there was literally 1 spot between her car and the cart corral. I was telling a guy at work this and he mentioned that he read that people who were successful in life return their carts. I looked for this article and nothing I found seems to be based on any data.

I figured that Chiefsplanet could provide some data.

I was in a large parking lot that had a fairly steep grade. It was fairly early, so foot traffic was light. I saw a cart catch a wind and start it’s course down the hill. Every ounce of me was praying it wouldn’t line up with a vehicle, which is why, I’m sure, it did. Rolling my eyes, I began my sprint after the rogue cart. Literally about a foot from impact into a really nice Toyota Tundra, I caught the cart. Instantly, car horns began blaring and fists were pumping from car windows as witnesses cheered for my victory.

Yes, I return carts because I can’t stand thinking of the possibility of having my car hit. Do unto others.

If you leave your cart in the lot I can only assume you also lick the inside of the package of your GPC cigarettes to get that last leaf.

It depends on where you're shopping. If the place you're shopping has an actual cart attendant as their primary job, then it's not convenient to have to get a stray cart that is away from the others. Not only that, but when an attendant has a large row of 20 carts or so, those carts are then being left behind cars that would like to pull out and leave while the guy has to go grab the stray cart. Cart attendants don't like blocking cars in and it makes it difficult to grab the stray ones when you're also trying to be polite to others who are looking to back up and leave.

If you're at a market that has a rotating cashier go out and grab them, then I can see why they wouldn't mind having an excuse to stay out a minute longer, but on busy days it only makes it worse for everybody. Moral of story, don't be lazy. Be courteous to others, don't think you're the only person in the world. Imagine if everyone just left their carts all over the place in a parking lot. It would be chaos.

Heroism is a great thing, but heroism that is noticed and recognized is even better.

A few years ago in a grocery store parking lot, I saw an older man that appeared to be in his mid-to-late 60s yelling at a younger man who appeared to be in his mid-20s. Apparently the older man did not appreciate the younger man's failure to place his cart in the corral. Words were exchanged, middle fingers were extended and a tussle broke out.

The younger man appeared to be having the best of it before they tumbled to the ground. At that point the young guy jumped up screaming. His face and chest were covered in feces. Probably some urine too. The old man's colostomy bag had gotten disconnected in the fray. Another guy and myself were about to jump in and help the old man. We were both glad that we didn't jump in before the shit really started flying...

Moral of the story? If an old man tells you to put your cart in the corral, you better do it.

Does it count as a returned cart if there is a cart by your car and you take it into the store and then leave it where you found it in the lot when you leave?

Sure, but only you will know the backstory when you leave it where you found it. Everyone else will say you're a lazy ass.

I'm anal about my car so that's part of what drives me to return my cart.

One day I was sitting in my car after having food shopped. I was checking my receipt when something caught my eye to the right. This woman five or six spots over not only didn't return her cart but she just let it start rolling as she got into her car. Of course it made a beeline right for my front fender. Unfortunately I was never going to be able to get there from the driver's seat, so ding it went. I screamed bloody murder at her and her face said she thought I might drag her out of the car and beat her. She almost ran someone over trying to get away from me. Luckily there was a plastic bumper on the cart and the incline wasn't very steep so there was no damage. But I wouldn't be surprised if she never went back to that store again.
