Need to replace my picture window in my living room. Its roughly 5' x 6'. I've replaced all the old double hung windows in my house with vinyl replacement windows. My question is, How does the picture window come out. The supplier says it comes out the same way as my double hung(thru the inside). That just don't make sense to me how it would come out that way or how i'd measure to order the right size.

I replaced a large picture window this fall.

My house is circa 1918.....

Mine was a large plate of glass that was "built in" with a structural frame.

During my project, I was doing siding as well, so I(we) removed the siding from the outside, and began removing the wood frame that held in the glass, cutting some of the nails with a saws-all. We pulled away what we had to in order to remove the glass, which ended up breaking as I tried to pull it out anyway.

It absolutely wasn't the same as the other windows.

Rebuilt the frame, and inserted the new windows..which I used 2 separate windows that had been spliced together by the manufacturer. It was about $200 cheaper than a large window (also considered a bay window) and we like being able to open them when its nice out. I'm glad I did my project that way.

Be sure to insulate around it while you've got it out to prevent draft.....same as the space holding the old weights in the doublehungs.

The glass was very, very heavy in my case....get some help.

I'm pretty sure that a chair will take it out. Unless of course you have some in-laws in for the holidays...then I'm pretty sure a mother in-law would take it out as well.

Tear off some trim. That will give you a better idea.

If that doesn't help, I'd hire a pro if I were you. Last thing you want to do is custom order the wrong size and double the price of your window.

I'm wanting to replace with the "replacement" style windows that don't involve siding work if at all possible. Close but no cigar.

If you can get the trim off, and remove the current window....replacements is what you want. I DID use replacement windows, but ordered them and used 2 windows, which were bound together to fill the opening.

All jokes asside, if you can't get it out without tearing into it like I did....very carfully breaking the window, removing the glass in chunks and installing the preordered replacement would work.

It shouldn't. Most windows come pre-assembled, with the brick mould attached to the window, for nailing onto the sheath, from the outside. Take the inside moulding out, using a thin, then thick-bladed putty knife, and see what you have. You can then see what you have form framing dims, and then closest-match your replacement, without tearing it out completely. A Sawzall, a hammer, and a Wonder Bar would do the trick for removing it completely, later.

I don't know why you'd want to replace your picture window, but to each his own.

Well you should start by pulling the casing off the top of the window and see where that mulled section joins the header pc of the window frame...there should be gap between the top of the window frame and the house header....if there is, then the house header is continous across the opening and no pressure is on the window, meaning you can do whatever you want with the opening.
