You've got to have a lower entry level price point. I don't care that the Xoom price is "comparable" to Apple's. The fact is, I can get an iPad for $499, $300 cheaper than the Xoom.

I don't know - Google just drives me crazy sometimes. We've been hearing about Honeycomb and the Xoom forever, and then the launch is just half assed. One high price point, "upgrades" needed to enable simple functions, and no real "blow the world away" functioning. After all of Motorola's quality advertising saying they're going to revolutionize the tablet, and for me it was very "meh".

In order to compete with the iPad, Honeycomb -needs- users. That's the only way you'll get the development support behind it. If I was buying a tablet, I'd go for Honeycomb. But if my sister, or girlfriend, or any other casual user asked me to recommend Honeycomb or iPad 2, I don't know how you in good faith say Honeycomb.
Agree with all of this. I was drinking the Xoom kool-aid bigtime after CES. At this point, I don't have a chance of convincing my wife that it's worth waiting for the wifi only Xoom that is going to be $100 more and we still don't know when it will be available. Why not announce that yesterday to take some attention away from Apple today?

Here is where I disagree. Android up until now never had any decent UI designs. I also have an EVO and Honeycomb is a completely different experience. Duarte joined Google from Palm and took over UI development starting with Honeycomb... so it's almost a totally new product in that regard.

It will be less than a year. The problem with saying this app store is bigger etc etc.. is that once you hit a critical mass, it doesn't matter. If there are 500 useful apps in the world, an app store with 50000 is no better than an app store with 5000. I would say 6 months and you can get any app you really need for an Android tablet.

The BIG advantage the Android tablets will have is with games. I really can't imagine wanting to play games on a tablet... but the hardware and OS are far more suited to game play.

I agree with your 500 useful apps comment, so sheer size is meaningless. Have they put Netflix on Honeycomb yet? Seems like it was demo'd somewhere with it, but don't think it's live yet.

Not sure, I know you can do Blockbuster but NetFlix keeps dicking around and blaming DRM issues... I wouldn't expect to see it until end of year.

Wow I can't believe apple still doesn't have a tablet capable of native HD playback. Massive omission for the iPad to only be capable of sd+ resolutions and not HD.

I played with the Ipad to test for work and after about 5 minutes I was bored with it.

Maybe it just me though..
Bob Dole uses the hell out of his iPad. Especially at meetings and conferences. iPad+Evernote+Dropbox = Productive time.

People freak out when they leave a meeting and get back to their office and find they've already got Bob Dole's meeting summary waiting in their inbox. It's nice to record the conference call with a vendor so you have a record of what they promised. No fumbling through your stack of crap for the conference agenda. Check email and screw around on Chiefsplanet when the conference session isn't living up to expectations. Take a photo of the whiteboard with the iPhone in Evernote and you have searchable note that's large enough to read on the iPad to go back over and compare to the project's new SOW. On and on...

I'm also a big supporter of whoever said, "You don't need an app for the web.", even more so on tablet form. I haven't spent enough time with the Honeycomb browser, but I've heard good things. That would be a good improvement alone for Honeycomb. I don't have any desire to have an app for every website I ever want to visit.

Honeycomb, and Android in general, needs to improve on multimedia. I guess there is some speculation that Google wants to "cloud" the service, and so is having a hard time getting agreement from the copyright holders. They might hit some resistance from their manufacturers too. Will Samsung be willing to ditch the "Media Hub" for a Google branded service.

But really, people bitch about iTunes, but what's the alternative being delivered for mass use? If I'm sitting with my Xoom, and want to watch an episode of some TV show, what do I do? To me, that's essential functionality. On the iPad, you pull up the iTunes Market, use the Netflix app, use the Hulu app, etc... What do you do with Android? And again, how has Google not addressed this yet?

Parity will come eventually, but again, only if Honeycomb can gain a market share large enough to bring developers in. With cell phones, that wasn't a huge issue as you had Verizon, Tmobile, and Sprint all looking for alternatives to the iPhone. Android was always going to gain a market share there by default. The same doesn't work with tablets.

And for god's sake, please hire some developers to create some awesome apps to show off your new operating system, or partner with other companies and give early access to the SDK. And no, Google Body doesn't count.

Yes if they make them small enough, eventually there will be no more cell phones just bandwidth links and devices(which is how it should be!). Still there's no excuse to not release it 4G capable at this point, not with all the 4G networks rolled out.

On Android, you use Blockbuster, Hulu, or any of the hundreds of illegal Flash based sites (Megavideo) that allow you to watch shows. There is NO show that can be found and played on an iPad that I can't find and play on an Android tablet.

I agree that the iPad is better for the iTunes crowd... no point in talking about Google's plan to compete with iTunes until they actually DO something about it. I've never had a use for iTunes so it's not for me.

"Hello! We notice that you are trying to access Hulu from your Android. It's not available, but we are working hard to bring our Hulu Plus subscription service to this Android device! Stay tuned for updates."

If you want Android, and Honeycomb specifically, to compete with Apple, then the entire Android community needs to move beyond this idea that hacking or tricking the phone is an acceptable alternative to real functionality.

There are also situations where a non-internet solution is needed. Maybe download a movie or two to watch on a flight?

As for Blockbuster, I didn't even know they still existed.

Weird, I had assumed Hulu was on Android.. since I find Hulu to be damn near useless.. I hadn't checked.

I am not talking about tricking or hacking the device... I am talking about the fact that 90% of the video I watch comes from Flash sites like MegaVideo... but I don't see that as a viable solution for the "average" user and will admit they need sites like Hulu to offer proper Android support.

The easiest overall solution is to get a cloud media service up and running. .. but I'm not holding out hope for that anytime soon.
