I just dont understand the fascination of tablets. For the same price of an ipad you could buy a decent laptop.

Because its a large touch screen and more portable than a laptop, I think. They are still way over priced. Its a novelty thing. They'll come down soon enough.

I can get behind most of that. I agree that the horsepower doesn't matter at all right now.

However, I do think that a lot of the things Honeycomb is doing is way better than what iOS is doing when it comes to the UI. I generally dislike the way iOS is completely locked down and you have to jailbreak it to get it to do something cool, but I understand why they do it. This is why I hope iOS5 is awesome, because if not, I'll be switching.

I can buy any tablet and install new versions of the OS as I see fit.

Take everything you have seen regarding Android phones and throw it out the window... the landscape has changed.

Let's look at the list of manufacturers that will be releasing tablets soon...
I think you're delusional. I'd bet $100 that a year from today, Samsung, Motorola, and HTC will have tablets out with their skin and bloatware on top. And they'll all be as roughly pathetic with upgrades as they are today.

Most are going with stock honeycomb because for some reason there was this mad rush to the tablet market. Everyone wanted a honeycomb tablet out immediately, so they're taking what Google gave them. I don't believe for a second they were all wowed by the genius of Duarte. It was just new, and they didn't have the time to figure out what to do with it.

But maybe they'll surprise me. Like you said, right now there's only the Xoom. So let's see the market mature before I make assumptions.

Love me some IIc.

Apple's track record is considerable better the last decade. They still have 75% market share in MP3 players, and they merely perfected that product.

I gotta say, considering the price, functionality and quality of iPods, I'm dumbfounded as to how anyone owns a non-Apple mp3 player...

The app store kicks the crap out of Android Market.

Just as you elaborated on future specs, the iPad will improve on specs with future versions.

Will the Android tablets be heavily subsidized like the phones were? Probably not. So go out and buy a Xoom for $800
when was iPad 1 ever $400?

I paid $49 for an 8GB Sansa about a month ago, and it works great. An iPod with the same amount of storage space would be at least double that. I was also able to add another 16GB with a microSD card for an extra $25. Plus, I don't have to deal with iTunes.

Yeah, I have an 8gig Sony I paid $60 for. Very simple to use. I thought about getting an 8gig iPod Nano when I bought this but it was more than twice as much.

Let's look at the iPhone vs Android phones... the first "real" Android OS came out in April 2009.. that's less than 2 years ago... The iPhone had almost a full 2 year head start. Android has now passed iOS and is on the road to dominance.

The same will happen with tablets and probably even faster... Since Android's first tablet OS is only a week old.. I imagine that it will take a full year to 18 months to catch up in terms of market share.

THAT SAID, Android Tablets will be the far better product starting about two months from now... as old iPads wear out and get outdated... you'll see a number of users switching over, but the significant gains will be in new users to the tablet space... especially ones who are waiting for more affordable options.

In summary, yes iPad has a head start and will maintain a lead in overall market share for awhile... but starting around Christmas I expect NEW tablets sales to shift in favor of Android based units... then it's just a matter of time.

P.S. Apple has an even higher share than 80% if you are talking "true" tablets and not bastard netvertible tablets like mine.
As old iPads wear out and become outdated, you know what's going to happen? People are going to buy new iPads.

Having played around with a few different tablets in the last few days, I can't help but notice how every device that isn't an iPad seems thrown together, choppy, and very anti-user friendly. You can talk to me all you want about flash and open source apps, but the fact that the iPad is just an overall stress-free, pleasant user experience counts for a lot.

Nobody can say Apple doesn't have its flaws, but they put high quality products out into the marketplace. Why do you think laptops with double or triple the hardware capabilities cost several hundred dollars? Because hardware isn't everything; Apple gets more out of its resources than every other manufacturer out there, and it is obvious to anyone who ever uses an Apple product made after 2006.

quality is good, but price and functionality are not.

I DETEST iTunes... so iPods are not an option... of course who the hell needs an iPod now anyway... even the cheapest phones can double as an MP3 player.
