I still think CP deserves a little credit for drafting Johnson.

I have been listening to radio shows and TV stations that decline to give CP any credit for drafting Johnson. Everyone seems to be saying anyone could have made the pick. And maybe so, once Johnson was there at #15.

BUT....

CP and gang had TWO players targeted for our pick at #15 in Thomas Davis and Derrick Johnson. And as both of them continued to be there as the #15 pick drew near..... 9th... then 10th.... then 11th... then 12th... and finally past the Saints trade up to #13, we were assured of getting one of the two.

Leading up to the draft, most everyone was debating the merits of trading up by giving up a 1st AND 2nd to get into range to get Johnson. But, by having Johnson AND Davis as targets (and I truely believe Davis would have been an outstanding 2nd prize in this derby) we were able to set tight and let the chips fall as they may.

So thank you Thomas Davis for being a player worthy of allowing us to set tight and allow CP to do what anybody else could have done....

And thank you CP for having a plan B and not having to trade UP and waste draft picks as most here and there would have had you do.

You'd never get any deals done if you didn't. Somehow this is got turned into not being interested. Carl's bullheaded.. he traded out of the first round last year for just a 4th or 5th round pick. If he wants to trade down, he will.
I agree. If Baltimore had called up and offered Ray Lewis, Chris McAllister, and their number one pick (22nd overall) in exchange for the DJ pick, it's nice to know that Carl would at least take their call and entertain their offer. I see nothing to complain about wrt this draft.

that's right, it's exactly what in my mind.
DJ was a walk, the Surtain trade was the homerun of this game.

If Carl would have just kept the round 2 pick for spite, and drafted in his normal fashion just to prove a point that the fans/media dont dictate what he does, it could have been a disaster.

Then, not only did he deal the 2, he paid Surtain what he was worth, and didnt string it all out any longer with lowball BS.

Having Surtain onboard really took the sting out of those 3 corners being drafted in the top 10, thats for sure.

Because of the trade, we were able to take Johnson at 15, and rest easy with the fact that we werent sacrificing the secondary for help on the front 7.
Actually we got Surtain and in a way Grigsby which is better the just trading the 2nd for Surtain. IMO Carl came out on top by the mere swapping of 5th rounders. WooWhooo

It's just fuggin brilliant. On draft day, ESPN reported that KC had taken some calls regarding the #15 pick. Carl confirmed that, yes, they did answer the phone, but once they found out one of the teams wanted Johnson, talks were done.

Now I hear Keitzman on the radio talking about how the Chiefs "shopped" the pick.

It's really quite simple and easy to understand. All people have to do is quit bitching long enough to LISTEN.

I would have to say "feh" to those people...

Peterson deserves ALL the credit for drafting Johnson.

It is only fair, since he takes ALL the heat for every bad thing that occurs.

Actually, to be technical, Peterson shouldn't get credit for much of anything yet. Until DJ actually produces on an NFL field, this pick is no better than Ryan Sims.
