Pop Throws Shade

Spurs Coach Gregg Popovich throws some shade on Donald Trump (again)

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/...=.c1827fd3a452

Before the San Antonio Spursí game against the Cleveland Cavaliers on Saturday night, Coach Gregg Popovich took a question from a reporter regarding his thoughts on the various womenís marches that took place earlier in the day all over the world in protest of the inauguration of Donald Trump. The resulting response lasted about four full minutes, and it went on largely without interruption.

Popovichís complete remarks can be read below.

ďThe march today was great. The message is important. It could have been a whole lot of groups marching. Somebody said on TV, ĎWhatís the message?í The message is obvious. Our president comes in with the lowest rating of anybody whoever came into the office. Thereís a majority of people out there, since Hillary won the popular vote, that donít buy his act.

ďI just wish he was more Ö had the ability to be mature enough to do something that really is inclusive, rather than just talking and saying, ĎIím going to include everyone.í He could talk to the groups that he disrespected and maligned during the primary and really make somebody believe it. But so far, youíve gotten to the point where you really canít believe anything that comes out of his mouth. You really canít. All those thousands that were on the rooftops after 9/11? There were two. ĎWe went to Hawaii and checked his birth certificate, and my investigators couldnít believe what they found.í There wasnít anything there. Itís over and over again.

ďThe CIA today, instead of honoring the 117 people behind him where he was speaking, he talked about the size of the crowd. Thatís worrisome. Thatís worrisome. Iíd just feel better if someone who was in that position showed the maturity and psychological and emotional level of someone that was his age. Itís dangerous, and it doesnít do us any good.

ďI hope he does a great job. But thereís a difference between respecting the office of the president and the person who occupies it. That respect has to be earned. Itís hard to be respectful of someone when we all have kids and weíre watching him be misogynistic and xenophobic and racist and make fun of handicapped people.

ďAnd what really bothers me are the people around him, the Sean Spicers, the Kellyanne Conways, the Reince Preibuses, who know who he is and actually have the cynical approach and disingenuous attitude to really defend him and try to make it look like he didnít say what he said. When heís mad at the media for them reporting what he said, it just boggles my mind. When Kellyanne Conway said he wasnít really making fun of the handicapped person, itís incredible. It really makes you wonder how far would someone go to actually cover for somebody that much. I think the comment was ĎYou had to look in his heart. You donít know whatís in his heart. He wouldnít do that.í But he did it.

ďAnd all the things he said during that time, if our children would have said it, we would have grounded them for six months. Without a doubt. But we ignore all that, because Ö because why? That says something about all of us. And thatís whatís dangerous. Thatís what scares the hell out of me to this day and makes me uneasy.

ďBut I felt great today watching the march, in protest to how he has conducted himself, because it tells me I really do live in a country where a lot of people care. We have to be vigilant, to make sure that although we all hope he does good things for our country, we donít get embarrassed by him and roll back liberties that have been worked for for so long in so many different areas.Ē

A brief pause brought a follow-up question, with Popovich asked whether he was defending the media, a group with whom he has occasionally sparred.

ďWell, I think you know when the media reports what he says, Iím not sure why he can get angry about that. But it does boggle the mind how somebody can be so thin-skinned. Itís all obvious, itís about him. If anything affects him, if itís Saturday Night Live or Hamilton, or she got three more million votes than you. ĎTheyíre illegal.í It doesnít matter what it is; thereís a pattern there. And thatís dangerous.

ďIíd like to have someone with gravitas, but he got there through the electoral college, which is part of our system, and I hope he does some good things. I just, there was a young lady on today who said, ĎI just wished he had gone up there and said something like, and, I know I said certain things, or you know I would really like to bring the people who donít feel, or I know some of you are scared.í But he canít do that because bullies donít do that. Thatís why.Ē

This was not the first time Popovich has gone in on Trump. Just days after the November election, the U.S. Air Force veteran relayed his reaction, saying, among other things, that Trump ďis in charge of our country. Thatís disgusting.Ē

The shade didnít stop there. When Popovichís military experience came up in the media session, he again pulled no punches.

Given that there were 4-5 million illegal votes that went to Hillary, she didn't win the popular vote. With voter IDs not being required there's no way to prove it wasn't 5 million, or only 20, so there's no point in claiming somebody else's numbers are wrong.

Given that the NBA is infinitely better than the garbage that is college basketball, I imagine many people do.

Not nearly so many as used to follow it. NBA is now geared 100% to black culture.

Nate Silver wrote a long piece a few years ago how the NBA is popular among minorities.

I totally get why their front offices and coaches and everyone caters to their customer base. But Roger Goodell should be fired for insulting his. Key difference. And Brady/Bellichik have nothing to hide either about their friendship with Don given the NFL demo clearly voted Trump

The term "throwing shade" comes from black and Latino gay communities.

The term's first significant step into straight culture was in the 1990 documentary about young, black, and Latino drag queens in New York City, "Paris is Burning."

The central characters explain their culture and guide you through the underground world of parties and drag balls.

In one scene, a queen named Dorian Corey explains what "shade" is.

Popovich is a "White privilege" leftist kind of guy, so him throwing shade on Trump is about as meaningful as Pitt Gorilla doing it, which is to say, meaningless.

Gregg Popovich Says 'We Live in a Racist Country,'

San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich explained Monday night why he thinks it's important for the NBA to celebrate Black History Month.

"I think it's pretty obvious," he told reporters. "The league is made up of a lot of black guys. To honor that and understand it is pretty simplistic. How would you ignore that? But more importantly, we live in a racist country that hasn't figured it out yet. And it's always important to bring attention to it, even if it angers some people. The point is, you have to keep it in front of everybody's nose so they understand it still hasn't been taken care of and we have a lot of work to do."

Popovich espoused a similar view last February when he made an appearance on the San Antonio Express-News' Spurs Nation podcast (h/t For The Win's Alysha Tsuji).

"It's a remembrance and a bit of a celebration in some ways," Popovich said. "It sounds odd because we're not there yet, but itís always important to remember what has passed and what is being experienced now by the black population. It's a celebration of some of the good things that have happened and a reminder that there's a lot more work to do."

According to NBA.com's Brian Martin, players have been sporting warmup shirts in February with a series of words that "reflect NBA players' longstanding commitment to equality and diversity through using the game of basketball to bring people together."

Off the floor, teams across the league are holding events in support of the African American community.
