2012 Kansas City Royals Repository Thread

2012 Slogan: Our Time

A better, more accurate 2012 Slogan: It is Finally Next Year
(from Great Expectations)

An alternative slogan if you don't like that one: Someone has to win this crappy division
(from alnorth)

With the beginning of a new year, it is time for the 2012 version of the Royals Repository Thread. We've got Hosmer, we've got a 2011-dominating Gordon, we've got Moose, we've got hopefully a killer bullpen, we've got a stereotypical slow slugging DH, we've got easily one of the best defensive shortstops in the AL, we've got a promising catcher in Salvador Perez. Hell, we've got offense and promising prospects galore.

We do not have starting pitching.

Oh yeah, we've also got this:

Get ready for, (as of January 2012 anyway), one of the most confusing puzzles of a baseball season in recent Royals history. Will they suck? Maybe, I don't know. Will we be given a year of 0.500 baseball? Possibly, I don't know. Will they win the division and go to the playoffs for the first time in 27 years? For the first time in a long time, it could happen, I don't know. 92 losses, 92 wins, or anything in between would not surprise a lot of us.

Everything goes here except Gameday threads and really big news. If a giant story breaks, the Royals achieve some awesome milestone, or we sign/lose a highly significant player/coach/mascot/whatever, then it might also deserve its own thread. This being Chiefs Planet, please do not clutter the board with new threads about trivial Royals news or you will only annoy those who come here for just Chiefs football. If you aren't sure and its not a Gameday thread, it goes here.

What sort of stuff often goes here? SPchief explained it well, so I'll just copy that:

Quote:
If you locate something of interest.. ANYTHING.. deals on apparel, best ways in/out of the stadium, giveaways, great stories from this season or from seasons gone by, rumors, trades, anything.... feel free to post it here.

I would hesitate to move Ventura after watching him a couple times. I think that kid is gonna make it as a starter in the MLB. He has all the tools and just needs to transition from a thrower to a pitcher mentality. They carried him to 85 pitches in this last outing and he still had gas. I would be more inclined to trade Odorizzi than Ventura at this point based on the eye test. A simple fact I would like to point to: we should move Clint Robinson. We have no room for him in the bigs at this point. He's in his sixth year in our system.

TINSTAAPP. Trade 'em all.

And Robinson is 27 and thus no longer a prospect. Might be able to get a very small return, but moving him would primarily be the right move for the player.

I completely agree on Robinson. Other than Frenchy's spot there really isn't a position spot open on this team. And since we assume Frenchy's is taken by Myers there isn't one at all. Yeah you can talk about second base, but I don't mind the combo of Getz and Gio at all. One bats left and plays better D, the other bats right and has a little more pop. I think they both compliment each other nicely.

I don't mind it either. But Gio is tearing it up and could fetch more in a trade. Falu is a more versatile right-handed utility infielder, imo, because he can also spell Moose. JMO

Funny thing about TINSTAAPP. I don't think its a great concept. You need to self-scout really well with pitchers, imo. Fix the ones who can be fixed and deal the ones who can't while others are still raving about their stuff. There is nothing wrong with Ventura's stuff. You just have to teach him to be a pitcher.

His value is strong right now, and his body type suggests that he'll break down. I wouldn't hesitate to try to make a move with him.

I agree in principle to everything that you've said above, but I'm just at my breaking point with hearing about/thinking about pitching prospects.

I forgot about Falu. And he did prove to be a pretty decent player up here swinging the bat. Either one works. Just trade whoever we need to in order to unload Frenchy on someone.

Well, you are perfectly justified in that opinion, imo. Interestingly, if I had to pick a team who has been killing it in the pitching development department, it would be the Tigers over the last four to five years. We have Knapp as our minor league pitching coordinator now. There is hope. Interestingly, Rany specifically mentioned the Tigers as a team that does really well self scouting on his most recent podcast with Joe Sheehan. I don't follow them closely enough to say one way or the other, personally.

But more to the point, I would be on-board with the "Any three to four prospects but Myers and Starling" approach with the caveat that I really like Ventura and would not personally put him in the deal.

I would be happy to trade Starling. But he would have to a centerpiece type and not just some throw in. I think Cuthbert and Ventura or Starling plus something else would get us a pretty good pitcher like a Josh Johnson. But like you, if we don't have to get rid of Ventura, that's fine by me.

Starling, if he pans out, allows us to move Cain or Gordon in 2015 and replace them with a superior athlete. I don't think I would give that up lightly. One of those guys could net us quite a few nice prospects if they keep their current pace.

They'd probably want Myers as part of a package for dealing Johnson

For a year and a half of control? A year which is a foregone conclusion for them, I might add. I doubt it.

Zack Grienke Definitely Going to Be Traded, According to Brewers GM Doug Melvin
by Doug Reardon
on Thu, Jul 26, 2012
at 7:23PM
Comments

With the MLB trade deadline fast approaching, there's a lot of uncertainty hovering over the majors and its players. But make no mistake about this: Zach Greinke, the most desirable pitcher currently on the market, will be traded by Tuesday's non-waiver deadline, according to Brewers general manager Doug Melvin.

The decision to trade him came after the team's most recent road stint, during which they went winless through six games. Grienke indicated to the Milwaukee Brewers that he wanted to test free-agency but has not named any specific teams to play the role of his potential new suitor. Now in his ninth year in the majors, Greinke arrived in Milwaukee after seven years in Kansas City, where he has been the bright spot of a struggling Brewers team that currently ranks fourth in the NL Central.

His ERA is 3.44 with a 9-3 record through 21 starts. He is on pace for his third season of winning at least 16 games with 200 or more K's. As of right now, the Texas Rangers, Atlanta Braves, Chicago White Sox and Los Angeles Angels have shown interest in adding Greinke, according to USA Today. After spending years in small market towns like Kansas City and Milwaukee, it could be time for Greinke to move to a large stage where his talents could be better served. At 28-years-old, there is still plenty of time for this young righty to make a handful of postseason appearances.
