49ers have completed a trade with the Chiefs for Alex Smith, tho can't be official til March 12. Chiefs really made a commitment to Smith

Pretty much where i am with it. Not what i would have done, but apparantly they felt that A. Smith gives them the best option to turn things around quickly. IM pretty certain Clark hired Reid and company because he wants the bleeding to stop RIGHT NOW, not 2 or 3 years from now. Ill be even more cool with it if they somehow trade down and get some more picks, and select a QB to groom in round 1 or 2.

Whatever the case, A. Smith isnt sexy, but he will help stabilize the ship for awhile. If he performs above what everyone thinks, even better.

Yep. My view, too. I really don't think Reid brought him in to continue his role as a game manager. Reid thinks he can be more than that, or he wouldn't have traded for him.

Not ready to accept this just yet. If we still take a QB in the draft that needs a couple years on the bench (i.e. Bray) to develop then I am on board.

I know a few on the board like DAkc hate him, but does EJ have any hope? I didn't catch many FSU games, he looked good at the combine and senior bowl. Maybe a Ben/Culpepper type player?

I just don't see it. Why would they give away two second round picks for a two-year stopgap? It's absurd. No, I firmly believe Reid is tying his legacy here to Smith, and he'll be the starter in KC for at least three years, until panic mode sets in.

The only way Smith gets a short leash is if he plays abysmally from day one. Which is certainly possible.
