Half Life 2 revisited

Reading through the Dead Rising thread, Zooted Granny mentioned Half Life 2. OF course I think, "I have that" Let's play it on a harder difficulty!"

Well, a couple of weeks later, I think I have developed carpal tunnel from that game. I'll be sending all medical expenses in care of one Granny, Zooted.

I see where they are continuing the story with three "mini games". Has anybody picked up the first installment yet?

Good game, I really liked the Ravanholm part. Doubt I'll pick up the mini-games though.

Ravenholm is great. I was disappointed that you couldn't find any saw blades laying around after that, just to see if you could rip some Combine soldiers in half.

From what I understand, nothing has changed for the mini-games as far as engines or installments. It's the same game, just continued.

Get to it! The game is only 5 hours or so long. I'd ask to pirate your pirated copy, hax04, but I play it on XBOX. My computer trying to play HL2 would be like Skip trying to run a marathon.

I bought and played through Episode 1 twice. It's definitely worth the money. Alyx fighting alongside you really adds a lot to not only the story but the gameplay experience and they introduced a couple of new twists on the physics puzzles. It also has a running in-game commentary that you can turn on, which, for me, was incredibly interesting and something I hope becomes a standard feature for all genres of games.

Episode 2 was recently delayed a few months, and I think now it comes out early next year, along with Team Fortress 2 & Portal, which both look AMAZING.

Valve is actually refining the Source engine to include soft shadowing and new lighting. You should be able to see the difference in the trailer.

HL2 Ep 2 trailer: http://www.xboxyde.com/leech_2972_1_en.html
TF2 trailer: http://www.xboxyde.com/leech_2981_1_en.html
Portal: http://www.xboxyde.com/news_3186_en.html

Also, if you have a 360, Valve is putting together a package of HL2, HL2:E1, HL2:E2, Portal & Team Fortress 2 to simultaneously release with HL2:E2.

Probably my favorite purchase for the 360 thus far. Hell, I might go play through the whole Half Life storyline thing again. (Interestingly, I've never played the first Half Life game. I don't think I've ever even seen it)

Am I wrong in hoping they incorporate the Portal gun into the Episode 3 storyline?

Half Life, the original, is one of the greatest games of all time. It was one of the very first FPS to be story-based, rather than simple fast-twitch shooter.

When I read the hype for Bioshock, I always harken back to HL. Bioshock, to me, is not original... sure, the storyline is different and the graphics are way better, but I've played games like it before... like Half Life (not taking anything away from Bioshock - I love the game)

Half Life is the platform which brought Team Fortress back to prominence. I liked it in Quake, but it frigging ruled in the HL engine (until they nerfed the grenades that is).

Half Life is the platform that introduced Counterstrike, which was the tits until beta 6.

I would love to see the original Half Life redone with a new dazzling engine. That would be badass.

Valve is releasing a super-duper version with all of the fixins for the 360 and PS3.

Quote:
Speaking at EA's annual summer press event, Valve's Gabe Newell revealed that Half-Life 2 would be headed to the Xbox 360 and PS3, bolstered with extra content and presumably, plenty of opportunities to kill people with high velocity toilets. The full console package will be comprised of Half-Life 2, Episode One, Episode Two, Team Fortress 2 (it still exists!) and an entirely new title, Portal.

According to Gamespot, Team Fortress 2 now sports a cartoonish art style and a 60's spy feel akin to that of Monolith's No One Lives Forever -- certainly a description you'd never expect to be about a game from Valve. The developer is also trying new things with Portal, which incorporates a rather imaginative gun and encourages you to blast Prey-like portals into floors and walls for all manner of object shifting, puzzle solving hijinx.

The console versions of Half-Life 2 (along with all the extra goodies) are expected to launch alongside the PC game's second episodic expansion. Barring unforeseen code thefts and other delays, that means they'll be out by the end of the year.
Not that it makes up for the lack of mouse/WSAD controls, but it should be nice.

Seriously, how hard would it be to enable support for a mouse and keyboard in 360 games? They've already got the ability to attach a USB keyboard to the 360 for typing. Why are they holding out on us?

Episode 1 was great. Picks right up where HL2 leaves off.
