Craig's 47 and I think only contracted for one more. There can't be that many more of this incarnation left.

Yeah, I remembered reading that they were going to do 5 but I wasn't expecting a re-boot after Craig left; just more of a continuation.

I guess every new Bond did create a slightly different tone, though Brosnan really just went back to Roger Moore's schtick (just slightly better).

When you watch Layer Cake you can see that Craig really does have that sort of prankster asshole gear if he wants to use it; very similar to the Connery Bond - they just aren't taking him that route. Instead they're going full Bourne with the tortured assassin angle.

Again, I don't mind it - it was a brilliant re-boot to the franchise and likely saved it. I just think they've gotten themselves mired up in it.

I agree I'm ready for a little more fun in the Bond films, but this was a necessary element to put in, I think. The existence of SPECTRE draws a stark line between the Bond films and more modern franchises like Bourne. That super evil, shadowy organization that is behind all the major terrorism in the world. It makes it more of a superspy thing rather than a political thriller.

Of course we'll have to see how this pans out, but I think they are wanting to use these movies to seriously overhaul the image of Bond. I guess we'll have to see if they go back to one off serial films or continue the reboot, repeat cycle. There aren't really any franchises I can think of that do what Bond did for all those years. Considering the fact that studios rarely like to buck trends, I wouldn't hold my breath hoping for the old days of self-contained Bond stories each movie.

I think its just what modern audiences expect now with franchise films. An interconnected universe with a serial storyline.

After Craigs Bond, they will probably return to the self contained movies, but who knows?

All i know is these Craig Bonds are pretty damn good and very entertaining.

But couldn't they have had the serial storyline without that storyline being Bond's past....again?

I absolutely loved the way they brought Moneypenny and the 'conventional' M into it in Skyfall. Then they even brought in Spectre. Okay - serial is handled - now make it more about badass villians and international intrigue.

Are modern audiences just incapable of suspending disbelief? Have we really reached the point where all movies have to be so grounded?

I mean, it may just be because I just watched Kingsman and found it to be as close to an old school Bond movie as anything I've seen in 20 years. I thought it was great. That kind of movie CAN be done and it doesn't even need to be as campy as Kingsman was. I just don't need another movie about the backstory of a character I've been watching literally my entire life.

Origin stories are all the rage these days.

I loved Casino Royale and Skyfall. I'm even one of the rare few that enjoyed Quantum of Solace. Until they make a bad Craig flick, I'll give them the benefit of the doubt.

Quantum of Solace was good because it wasn't a Bond backstory vehicle.

I still think that the title was bad enough that it pissed people off going into it. That movie isn't nearly as bad as people say it is.

Then again, it may well be the relative 'failure' of Quantum that has kept them going back to the backstory well through the Craig run. Maybe they decided that they tried the conventional Bond movie once and it didn't work.

QoS got panned initially by a few and then it just sort of watched everyone else hop on the bandwagon. I absolutely love the opening car chase scene.

You gotta remember that the writers strike hit right then, and so Craig and a couple of other guys ended up having to work up a script on the fly as it was shooting.

Due to the financials of the production, commitments promised for its release date slotting, and actors that had other scheduled projects, delaying production was not on the table.

Craig has been adamant about saying he is obviously not a writer, but he's a team player and so he stepped up to try to make the best of the situation.

BTW, how can anyone not be excited by the incorporation of the old school M, Miss Moneypenny, and SPECTRE? Seriously, they even brought back the sweet leather door to M's office. The new Moneypenny is smoky hot and her and Craig has outstanding on-screen chemistry.

Quantum was never going to be as good as Casino.
The main villain, and his right hand man, we're both jokes.
The story didn't really ever put Bond in danger or show his weaknesses like Casino or Skyfall did, that's been the crux of these movies so far is show Bonds reality, his suffering, make him mortal and then toward the end give us his redemption.
Not to mention you started QoS with Mr. White and a tease of showing us the organization that had LaShief scared shitless in Casino, and then it all falls flat and down to a bad wimpy villain instead of an organization that needs to be taken care of. Now we bring back White in the Spectre trailers to try it again, Waltz should be much better as the villain.
Did I mention I hated QoS villain?
