Roger Goodell's latest acid trip: a team in London

He is trying hard to replace Bud Selig as the craziest man in pro sports. And Clark weighs in at the end:

Hype Machine in Overdrive, N.F.L. Pops Back to London

The Jacksonville Jaguars have committed to play a game here each of the next four seasons, giving rise to talk that they or another team will one day move to London and become the N.F.L.’s first franchise overseas.

“We are going to be aggressive because we see the fans’ reactions to football and we want to be there on a more regular basis,” N.F.L. Commissioner Roger Goodell said in May.

“Roger has a vision for a permanent team in London, but he’s one of the very few that does,” said Marc Ganis, the president of SportsCorp, a sports advisory company that works with N.F.L. teams. “Commissioners get pie-eyed about international. What he got was an agreement to put on two games, maybe three, but he didn’t get a timeline” to establish a team in London.

Goodell has said that he hopes to turn the N.F.L. into a $25 billion business by 2027, from $10 billion now. To do that, the league would need fresh sources of income, including from overseas.

“Certainly, the league has grown substantially here in the United States and continues to do so,” said Clark Hunt, the chairman of the Kansas City Chiefs and the head of the league’s international committee. “But at some point, to keep that growth rate up, the international opportunity for the league is very important.”

So except that the schedule is inevitably going to have 4 away games against central and western teams.

Hawaii home games are at 6 pm local time. That is midnight east coast time when games start here. East coast teams come in here and do fine (and usually win).

I travel to Korea a lot, and to the mainland US a lot. I've gone from Missouri to Hawaii to Japan then back to Hawaii in just a few days. I understand time zones, as does anyone who lives here. Trust me, a professional athlete can deal with different time zones if a 52 year old man can.
A professional alert can deal with the time difference. But that isn't the point. The point is that one team has to deal with a time difference and the other does not. And sorry, but bodies are going to be effected by time changes that big. I've vacationed I'm Hawaii. I am always in bed by 11. I am always hungry because meals don't line up with my schedule. And worst of all... Here is only one team in London. It's not like the west coast where you can schedule a gradual road schedule.

In November, Hawaii travels to Annapolis, MD - on the east coast - to play Navy. Then a couple of weeks later Army travels from the east coast to play in Hawaii. This kind of shit happens every year. If they can do it surely professional athletes can.

Hell, they do every year. They travel from all over the country to play in the Pro Bowl in Hawaii, some of them playing in playoff games the weekend before.

I hate the London idea. I would rather they cut a deal with the Canadians and force them to build domed stadiums. At least the games would mirror time zones. I would also like to see competition with Direct TV. I would like to see communities outside team cities be offered season TV passes for either Sunday ticket for the league or only for a desired slate of teams or team. I'm not adverse to seeing the league move into smaller markets on a subsidized basis. It's just that college football has a big footprint, but it only grabs some of my attention. I just have zero interest in Europe.

Just because they can do it doesn't mean they should. Sorry, but in the Nfl every small advantage counts. It's stupid to create a physical disadvantage this big when you can avoid it.

The reason Hawaii does this is because they wouldn't have a team otherwise. People keep referring to Hawaii as if they're good. How many Nfl players come from Hawaii? It's not like they're a powerhouse against east coast teams. Anybody who has ever traveled knows there is a thing called jet lag. It messes up your sleep and eating schedule. I'm sure it messes up film and practice schedules too.

He was completely inept during the labor negotiation and costed owners millions.

This is a great idea:

The teams that play there will incur massive travel costs.
No fans in America will be able to attend.
Socker is the national game so NFL investment is a colossal waste of money there.

Hey asshole, why not invest in countries on the same continent?

1. Who ever said Hawaii is good? And how is that relevant? They have been good in the past. When June Jones was coach they were ranked, and played in the Sugar Bowl. And had two QBs during that time that broke NCAA passing records (Timmy Chang and Colt Brennan). So the distance didn't keep them from being good.

2. Currently there are five UH players in the NFL:

Davone Bess Cleveland Browns
Alex Green New York Jets
Kealoha Pilares Carolina Panthers
Samson Satele Indianapolis Colts
Isaac Sopoaga Philadelphia Eagles

There have been many more in the past. You might remember a kicker named Jason Elam, for example. Tied the record for longest field goal in NFL history. Gave the Chiefs fits for years.

But none of this has anything to do with the issue, it is just strawmen.

This. Some 'Muricans on the border might actually travel a few hours to see a game up north. Make a whole weekend out of it and spend some time in another country.

No one is paying reeruned airline costs to fly to England to watch a game...

Denver rookie QB John Elway, on Jack Lambert, after Lambert and the Steelers knocked Elway out of his first game as a pro (1983).

You might not be aware that there are Americans living in England. A lot of military, and quite a few civilians too. Shocking, I know.

And?

I wasn't talking about them. I was saying most fans in the states wouldn't travel with the team like they would if it was a 2 hour flight or couple hour drive...
