Advertising question
I dont know if we have any advertising gurus out there, but I have a question.

You know how when you watch an internet video clip on a news or sports site, you have to sit through 10-15 seconds of a commercial, and its usually something that is generic enough to appeal to a mass audience. Maybe energizer batteries or a car, whatever.

I watched a video clip on yahoo sports. Keep in mind, this is a sports site, which seems to me to be a bit less of a mass audience than something like CNN. So, I click on the video link and I am about to watch the obligatory commercial for... Purina Cat chow. Now I'm not gonna lie, I do have a cat, but I have to believe this is not the correct demographic. You are not going to click on a clip to see what awesome highlight plays happened with the Royals or the Celtics or whoever last night and go "hmmm, Purina, maybe I ought to get some of that at the grocery store for (insert silly cat name here) later this week". Right?

Well, how it breaks down is:

Company enlists advertiser, advertiser signs on for X amount of commercials per day. In this case I'm sure it would be a high number. Demographics via web base is not as important as number of times viewed. Depending on the amount of other companies enlisted for advertisement, Purina would not get optimal choice for demographic, just number of views per day.

It's a vicious cycle.
