Dwayne Bowe: I'm going to lead the league in Receptions and TDs

Dwayne Bowe: I’m going to lead league in catches and touchdowns
Posted by Josh Alper on May 15, 2013, 4:22 PM EDT

The Chiefs have made several moves to bolster the league’s lowest-scoring offense and one holdover from that team believes the payoff will be a handsome one for him and one of his teammates.

Wide receiver Dwayne Bowe thinks that he’ll benefit from quarterback Alex Smith’s arrival and he thinks running back Jamaal Charles is going to find a lot of success running behind an offensive line that has added Eric Fisher at right tackle.

(Jamaal Charles) is going to lead the league in rushing this year and I’m going to lead the league in receptions and touchdowns,” Bowe said, via Adam Teicher of the Kansas City Star. “When we get in full gear and pads and close to the season, it’s going to be a show to watch.”

There’s a good chance that winds up as an overly optimistic prediction, but Bowe has every reason to be excited about the changes to the offense in Kansas City this season. Smith is the best quarterback he’s played with in the NFL and Bowe should be an excellent fit in Andy Reid’s offensive scheme. That might explain why General Manager John Dorsey said he thought Bowe was poised to become one of the best receivers in the league.

That leap would be plenty for Bowe next season, even if someone else winds up with more catches and/or touchdowns.

Bowe doesn't strike me as the prototypical WCO WR...

Denver rookie QB John Elway, on Jack Lambert, after Lambert and the Steelers knocked Elway out of his first game as a pro (1983).

I'll take it.
Agreed. In the short term but you won't see anything like those stats if you line up 2010,11 and 12 for Alex. Though I'll admit he might have had a season at least a bit closer if he'd been able to finish out last season.

Still, the 9ers finished 23rd in total passing yards and Alex averaged 160 passing yards/game. It's probably skewed by the game he got hurt in but he was still on pace to throw for less than 3,000 yards.

If people are so sure Reid will air it out more, then the numbers will be close. Remember, Harbaugh pushed balanced, conservative offense. SF had a very strong defense and punter to play the field position game. Reid seems like he will take more risk and aggression to the field (at least somewhat more).. so Alex's INTs may rise a bit, but the pass yards should rise as well.

Doesn't matter how much Reid wants to air it out if his starting QB is too scared to take the shot.

I'm expecting lots of sacks and checkdowns.

Alex isn't a gunslinger, but this "scared" angle gets way overblown. Lots of checkdowns from Harbaugh in 2011-2012 were designed plays... clear-outs. This isn't the old 2006-2007 days where tons of checkdowns went to Gore just because they were easy.

... then again, with a guy like Charles out of the backfield (or in), maybe it would be wise and beneficial to check passes to him frequently.

Kind of a big difference.
Actually I was pointing out how players that make bold predictions (i.e. CJ2K's 2,000 yard rushing prediction made almost every year) always fall well short of said prediction.

Glad to see some enthusiasm. Hopefully everyone is this enthusiastic and it knocks the stink of losing off this team.

The 9ers were 4th in rushing and 23rd in passing. That's not balanced but it's definitely conservative. That's what you do when you have a really good team and a limited quarterback. When you don't have a really good team and you have an extremely limited QB you get Matt Cassel or Alex Smiths bad years.

I suppose we'll see as far as Andy Reid airing it out. I suspect we just drafted a RT with the first pick of the draft and a fullback later on for a reason. Alex may throw more times but I'd hope it'll all be underneath stuff and screens. I wouldn't call that airing it out though.

Fair enough. I don't happen to think Alex is as "limited" as some folks think. I think having a team of lackluster receivers... or at the very least.. receivers that don't yet fully know the new offense well.. was a "limited" aspect of the team. It should really say something to people when Vernon Davis.. our best receiving weapon.. tells the media that he didn't really grasp the 2011 offense well until late in the season. Add in the fact that we had a bottom 5 center and right guard on the OL? Yeah... Harbaugh was wise to "limit" the playbook.

I agree mostly with the last paragraph though. If Reid is wise, he would do well to trend towards a similar offense that Alex was so efficient with in SF.

I'll say this.. I hope you're right. I do think Alex is a good fit for a WC type offense as it should help cover for his lack of arm strength.

Bowe has earned his love. Alex Myth hasn't earned jack ****ing shit as a Chief. Until he proves otherwise, he shall be known to me as, "Grbono: The Quickening".

I wonder if this forum will be as active when the Chiefs start winning. As I've always said, half of this place comes here because they like to be martyrs and root against the Chiefs

I also think you will be slightly pleased with his arm strength. It has been much better since he worked with Tom House (pitching guru) and Alex tweaked his mechanics.

His arm will never be confused with the true cannons.. but it isn't "weak" either.
