If the Chiefs go 8-8 or better 49ers get a 2nd round pick.

A third- or second-rounder from Kansas City, the remnant of the Alex Smith deal. Now it can be told: The second draft choice San Francisco will receive from the Smith deal will be K.C.'s second-rounder in 2014 if the Chiefs go 8-8 or better this season. It will be a third-rounder in 2014 if Kansas City is under .500 this season.

So: San Francisco will probably have first-, second- and four third-rounders next year. But if the Chiefs surprise, it'll more likely be a one, two twos and three threes. As we've seen, GM Trent Baalke is dangerous with extra picks in his hands. If Colin Kaepernick is very good, the Niners should be annual contenders for years with the picks laid out that way.

This post makes me reevaluate my own conspiracy theories regarding the Chiefs. Except the Hunt QB Mandate, of course.

Bullshit and you know it. If he was a franchise QB, he would have went for a first round pick. Teams just don't give away quarterbacks. Smith is an injury prone game manager that only does well playing Martyball.

There's a few things. Have people been calling Smith a franchise QB? He's a quality starter, best we could've gotten this year, IMO.

I didn't know a 2nd, and a conditional 2nd next year was giving him away.

Smith's availability had everything to do with Kaepernick's surge. If the 49ers were so confident in Kaepernick in the off-season why did they give Smith a 3 year deal worth 8 mill a season? Because they had no idea he'd play that well. And when he did, the choice was obvious.

You are also moving the goalposts here. He's not a franchise QB, and no one is claiming he is. Franchise QBs carry MUCH more value than 1 definite 2nd round pick and another potential one in the following draft.

Yes, because Martyball puts up 36 points in the playoffs.

Would I have traded for Alex Smith? No. But people I wanted here leading this team think enough of him that they can win with him. Am I going to stomp my feet and pout constantly before I even watch him play in a game? No, I won't do that either.

You all have written the book on how this is going to play out. Forgive the rest of us who actually want to have a shred of optimism.

Way to pull the all high mightly card on this acting like Zach does. I have seen Alex Smith. I think he sucks dick. Doesn't mean I'm not going to support him on game day same as ****ing worthless Cassel and other turds we keep trotting out there. Same shit different year with the Chiefs, the turd just smells a little nicer doesn't mean its still not a turd.

Harbaugh took one look at Smith and drafted Kapernickel...like any smart coach/franchise would

then they benched Smith for the QB they drafted...again, very smart franchise

then they found a dumb franchise and raped them in a trade for a backup QB they no longer needed or wanted...

one team is doing it right

one team is (always) doing it wrong

but hey, let's all clap real loud because our fee fees

So, you believe, they would've benched Smith last year even without the concussion?

I thought Alex Smith was playing great football before he got injured. What the **** did Kaepernick REALLY do in those whopping two games to cement him as the for-sure starter that the Niners needed?

My guess is he was young, was drafted by the current regime in charge, and wasn't a stale-ass POS game manager that can't play greater than the sum of his teammates' ability, like you ask out of most franchise QBs

They could have cut Alex after any year. It was not a 3-year commitment. Matt Flynn started 2 games and got a better contract from Seattle than Alex got from SF.

Alex was always a placeholder for Kaepernick. Always.

He's going to throw the ball more here

...don't you guys understand?

I'll wage to say he throws it ALOT more. Andy Reid isn't going to magically change into Herm Edwards.

And that's the scary part. He's shown that the more he is asked to do the more he struggles.

And Carson Palmer and Jay Cutler were both traded away from considerably more. The Raiders are idiots so I discount that one out, but a franchise QB in his prime is worth at least 2 1st. In turn Cassell was had for a high 2nd with Vrable thrown in which is probably more along the lines of Alex Smith's value. A 2nd round pick.

I also think bringing up Alex 1 playoff win should be a bannable offense since that arugement could be made for Sanchez and Tebow as well and they did that in their first seasons as a starter.
