There's a few things. Have people been calling Smith a franchise QB? He's a quality starter, best we could've gotten this year, IMO.

They could have cut Alex after any year. It was not a 3-year commitment. Matt Flynn started 2 games and got a better contract from Seattle than Alex got from SF.

Alex was always a placeholder for Kaepernick. Always.

And Carson Palmer and Jay Cutler were both traded away from considerably more. The Raiders are idiots so I discount that one out, but a franchise QB in his prime is worth at least 2 1st. In turn Cassell was had for a high 2nd with Vrable thrown in which is probably more along the lines of Alex Smith's value. A 2nd round pick.

I also think bringing up Alex 1 playoff win should be a bannable offense since that arugement could be made for Sanchez and Tebow as well and they did that in their first seasons as a starter.
