Killer apps for Android?

Since there's an iPhone version, I figured I'd start a Droid version. After being handcuffed by Sprint's SERO plan for the past two years, I finally ordered my LG Optimus S last night. It'll be here in about 24 hours. So, what toys should I play with when it arrives?

if you have to risk ruining your phone to make it work it sure sounds like you already are stuck with a worthless phone.

Awesome. I just picked up GLWG and Minecraft.

It's been mentioned a lot in this thread, but it's worth repeating: SwiftKey is waaaaaay better than than the stock Android keyboard. I would recommend it to anyone.

Started out with Swype, using Swifkey now. Both are good but I'm going back to Swype.

uh...wut? Advanced Android is nice for nerds like us who understand how to properly and safely do stuff like rooting. Personally I choose to have a phone that I don't have to actively maintain or take ridiculous steps to secure.

This frees me up to tinker with other more interesting things like BSD or my Debian server.

To go to your car analogy, there's probably a reason that person may have an old Camero in your garage that you can maintain but your wife drives a Honda that's guaranteed to run all the time that you don't have to mess with.

I hear you. My only point was that your premise that a reliable phone that does not require constant maintenance and a rooted phone are mutually exclusive is false.

I guess I've never thought of rooting as a requirement for stability or security. For me, it's just a way of gaining access to all sorts of toys. My phone was fine before I rooted it (aside from the lack of WiFi tethering).

@Vailpass - When you do root your phone, do you run as root all the time or is there some kind of layer that allows the user to jump into root momentarily if they need to a la sudo in the rest of Linux?

If I did have an android and did root it, I'd sure as hell hit that thing with a port scanner. IIRC, my jailbroken OG iPhone had SSH open after the initial process.

Once you're rooted, there's a program installed called SuperUser installed that basically elevates other apps to root privs on demand. You can either confirm it each time or check the "remember for next time" box if it's an app you trust. It's similar to the Windows UAC system.
