Draft Thoughts

Here are my draft thoughts on the Chiefs draft. First time in ten years not posting or reading the Planet during it. No Planet influences in my thoughts were actually kind of nice for a change.

1. Dee Ford, LB, Auburn
Don’t hate the pick. Don’t love the pick either. It’s a ho hum pick overall. Ford is an intangibles machine. Seemed to make his biggest impact in big games. But his injury history is a red flag. To me its getting Hali’s replacement in place a year before, unless they are thinking of doing something really stupid like letting Houston walk. Overall Ford is fine, not earth shattering move but at least it’s a playmaker position. That being said I really liked what I saw out of Xavier Su'a-Filo, would have had no problem with the Chiefs going with him in that spot. Houston got a 10 year starter at guard. The corners available really didn’t fit the Chiefs scheme. I liked Roby quite a bit; Denver got a good pick in him. Marqsie Lee would have been tempting; his sophomore year was just outstanding. But with Alex Smith feel he would have been wasted. Bridgewater was the one I have the most problem letting slip through. That is the only one that stings. I really don’t know what to think about Manziel though. You would think he will fall flat on his face with his size and ego, but he is really smart and does care about football. So who knows with him? Bridgewater would have been my choice, but take him away and its down to Su’a-Filo or Lee, with my lean going towards Su’a-Filo. But I can live with Dee Ford; it was in the right area for him.

2. Alex Smith Trade
The trade that keeps giving. Denver gets our pick, unbelievable – just keep passing us the lube.

3. Phillip Gaines, CB, Rice
See above with Ford – don’t hate it, don’t love it either. Has the size and speed that the Chiefs have been looking for at corner. Rice is one of the top academic schools in the nation, so you know he has to be pretty smart. A little nugget of information – Rice’s head coach’s wife is from Mid-Missouri. Again I probably wouldn’t have picked him but it really wasn’t a reach and it was a position of need so it’s alright.

4. DeAnthony Thomas, RB/WR/KR/PR, Oregon
This is my favorite choice. He is who I had hoped the Chiefs could get in the 4th. I don’t see McMidget in him at all, I see Dante Hall with the Jamaal Charles burst. The Black Mamba is flat out electric. Toub and Thomas is a wet dream on returns. He fits well with Alex Smith, short passes and let him get the YPA. I’m really excited for this pick. Make that love. McCluster’s touches are replaced with an actual playmaker – that is winning in my book.

5. Aaron Murray, QB, Georgia
Chiefs drafted a QB? Actual QB prospect at that not a James Killian type? Amazing. Murray before blowing his knee out was probably a second round pick. We get pretty good value. Murray is pretty solid across the board, don’t really see him projecting out to be a stud but he will be a decent QB in the league. But being a 5th rounder means he is still a lottery ticket and shouldn’t be a cause not to draft in the future in higher rounds. Still like the pick and maybe it shows the Chiefs are actually taking the right steps at the most important position.

6. Zach Fulton, G, Tennessee
Started a bunch at a SEC school and his a fatty with size that Andy Reid likes. Basically your average 6th round pick in the NFL draft.

6. Laurent Duvernay-Tardif, T, McGill
Freak from Canada. Classic project pick that you should make in the 6th/7th round range. It’s a crapshoot in the late rounds anyway so you could go any different ways. So the two sixth round picks really don’t mind them.

Overall the draft is a B. Pretty solid draft but nothing special. Don’t really know what to expect out of this season though. It almost screams rebuilding season to me, especially with our schedule. The front office hasn’t done a whole lot to make you think otherwise and last year’s playoff run bought them a pass in the eyes of the true fans more than likely. It will be interesting to see how it plays out, I doubt we get to play a bunch of scrub quarterbacks this year so we will see.
