Never a dominant athlete, but Mike Weir is the same for me. Or was...anyway. He dropped off years ago due to injuries/poor play and can't even play well enough to regularly make cuts anymore. It's tough to watch. Without him there, I can't say I follow the PGA Tour week to week with the same kind of devotion.

Is Mickelson really that bad these days? I know he hasn't played like he was for years now, but you can still see the flashes of talent sometimes. I mean, age isn't exactly the same restriction in golf that it is in some other sports.

Being a Mickelson fan is more infuriating/frustrating/baffling than any other sports or athletes i take a rooting interest in.

Watching him choke all those majors away couldn't have been easy, but the 2004 Masters moment was probably awesome because of it.

Top 3 sporting moment for me...happened on my b-day too so all the better. That entire Sunday was incredible overall...

Having said that Sunday at Winged Foot in 2006 is a Top 3 low sporting moment for me lol.

When you know, you know, and I can tell that his age+his arthritis have sapped him of the ability he formerly had.

He dropped outside of the top 50 in driving distance for the first time last year, he's putting with a claw grip (funny, b/c his putting is as good as it's ever been), and he doesn't flag approach shots with near the consistency he used to.

He rode a couple of good weeks to a high place on the money list this year, but he's ninth in the OWGR and not nearly the same player that he was 2004-2006.

The hardest part of it is that now he's clearly on the downside you look back at all the should-have-beens that weren't with frustration, especially the US Opens.

I know injuries hurt him, but I really think Weir ruined himself by trying out the Stack and Tilt snake oil. Harrington ruined his career with a swing change as well.

I was enraged by the 2006 US Open at the time. The most crushing defeat doesn't make me sad, but angry. Now, it hurts more than any other. Morbidly, I still watch highlights of that collapse somehow thinking it won't happen.

Geoff Ogilvie's chip-in on 17 was one of the better breaks in recent major history.

The ones that hurt nearly as much are the 1999 US Open, the 2001 PGA (Toms was such a fluke winner b/c he holed a 5 wood that was headed over the back, short-sided, in deep rough and a certain bogey), the 2009 US Open @ Bethpage, and the 2011 Open, when a garbage player like Darren Clarke careered it.

I see. If it really is nearly the end of elite golfer Phil Mickelson, you'd have to say that 4 majors was an underachievement for somebody with his huge level of talent. So many chances wasted for more.

And yeah, that might have been a factor with Weir. He hasn't been able to put anything on the fairway consistently since 2009. His swing has been ****ed up for quite some time.
