2017-2018 NHL Offseason Thread

Not sure this is thread-worthy, but I'm bored and this should be a crazy off-season with the inclusion of the Golden Knights.

Busy couple of weeks ahead.

Saad makes them better defensively... Kane/Panarin was so much fun to watch, but a liability on defense with both of them out there at the same time. And as CrossCheck said, Saad's locked up for much longer, while they very well might have passed on what Panarin fetches in free agency.

Same for Hjalmarsson/Murphy... Hjalmarsson is only signed for another 2 seasons, Murphy for another 5, and while their salaries are about the same, Hjalmarsson would obviously want more in a couple seasons..... and while I'm sure Hjalmarsson isn't done, they're selling high.

The TVR thing is weird... sucks for them that Vegas didn't even want him... I assume the Hjalmarsson deal was already in the works, but then why not make a deal with the Knights (or maybe they tried).

But... Kane-Panarin.

Strange move by Pitt picking up Reaves. That kind of changes Pitt's dynamics.

The Leafs won the draft taking Timothy Liljegren with the No. 17 pick. Scouts viewed him as the definitive second overall behind only Nolan Patrick at the beginning of the season. He got mono and dropped to 17. The Leafs may as well have won the lottery for a second year in a row.

Serve me a giant plate of crow, because Doug Armstrong KILLED IT tonight.

Ryan Reaves and a 2nd for Klim Kostin and Oskar Sunqvist. WTF was Rutherford thinking?

And Sweet Jesus - Lehtera is gone. Can't believe someone took on that worthless MF'er.

Marleau was still fairly productive last year. That seems like a good get for them.

Seems like Radulov is the only forward worth a crap still on the market, unless Galchenyuk/Duchene can be acquired via trade.

Possibly, until he's 40 though.... it just seems to go against what they've been doing the past couple of years and they don't exactly need more offense... I don't know what their cap situation looks like in the next couple years, but I assume they'll have a lot of work to do.

I wonder if Sakic knows what the hell he's doing with Duchene, there have been rumors about him asking way too much in return.

Rumor is that the Preds are interested but the Avs want one to our top 4 D men along with a prospect in return.

Marleau is a heavy player that will probably go well into his 40s, like Jagr, and will set a good example for the kids. As far as the cap goes, Nylander's an RFA at the end of next season. Matthews and Marner are up the next year. JvR, Bozak and Komarov come off the books at the end of this season freeing up 11.4 M, plus they have Nathan Horton's 5.8 M contract to use as LTIR.
The Leafs have spent a ton of money to make sure the cap isn't an issue. (They hired the guy who wrote the CBA as their capologist). I think they'll be fine in the long term but this was a bold move to indicate their immediate intentions.
The other shoe will probably drop when no one's paying attention- JvR trade for a RHD.

Kind of surprised the Devils were able to get Johansson from WAS for only a 2 and 3. I know they were up against the cap but I think they could have gotten more. Good for us I guess.

Also, I think STL made a nice quiet signing in Beau Bennett. He has had injury issues but he is a pretty good possession guy who is capable of scoring a lot more than he has. Lot of Devil fans wanted to keep him and give him more time to live up to his potential but I guess they wanted room for all the young forwards we have. Also rumors he wasn't all effort at the end of the year which is part of why Cammallari is gone.

I looked a little bit and saw Horton's will be going away... and they're paying for Lupul for one more season? Those two would free up quite a bit. I assumed it meant JVR wouldn't be resigned, either.

https://www.capfriendly.com/ - a hockey geek's best friend.

This deal pretty much seals JvR's fate. He won't be re-signed. They can either trade him, in the last year of a reasonable contract, with some prospects for a D-man or use him for a push for the cup. Either way the Leafs win.

In terms of the cap, Horton is on Long Term Injury Reserve, (LTIR). His cap hit is 5.3 M for 3 more years. When you have a player on LTIR you can use that cap space to sign a replacement player. Horton has 3 years left and Marleau was signed for 3 years.

They've also signed Marleau on a front end, signing bonus laden contract that means he'll be paid 8M year 1, 6M year 2 and 4M year 3. This makes him a desirable pick-up for a team looking to reach the cap floor in year 3 after the bonus has been paid out. He'd cost the team 1.5 M with a 6.5 M cap hit.

I'm geeking out at this point, but it seems like a good pick-up and a shot across the bow to the rest of the league.

Ah, didn't know about being able to use the cap space for someone on LTIR.
