****Official 2013-14 Missouri Tiger Football Repository Thread****

We have two things to look forward to this year:

1) The potential beginning of the Maty Mauk Era. Mauk represents the best chance for this program to get back to a level of respectability after horrendous QB play cost us multiple games last year.

2) The last year of the Gary Pinkel era. Pinkel's entrenched cronyism won't play in a conference this competitive, especially if he couples his abysmal gameday coaching with lackadaisical, worst-in-conference recruiting. Pinkel was the formerly adequate meal that has now turned into a four pound bowel obstruction. It's time to jam a Fleet's enema up our collective asses.

Here is the schedule. We dodge Alabama, LSU, and Arkansas in the west and the Non-con is decidedly weaker than years past.

8/31: Murray State
9/7: Toledo
9/21: @ Indiana
9/28: Arkansas State
10/5:@ Vanderbilt
10/12: @ Georgia
10/19:Florida
10/26: South Carolina
11/2:Tennessee
11/9: @ Kentucky
11/23: @ Ole Miss
11/30: aTm

Looks like 6-6. Undefeated in non-con, 2-6 in league play.

I will eventually update the OP with a list of high profile in-state recruits that decide to go elsewhere after a half-assed attempt to gain their services. The inevitable cavalcade of *** rejects, skeezers, skanks, and scalliwags we get will fill out the ranks.

Razors, cyanide capsules, and Jonestown Kool-Aid are available in the break room. Second door on the left.

Since every Mizzou thread eventually dies of AIDS, I recommend starting anti-retroviral therapy immediately. I believe Walgreens covers Express Scripts.

Premium In-State Players:

Roderick Johnson: **** OT, Florissant, MO.
Monte Harrison: **** WR, Lee's Summit, MO.
Jimmy Swain: **** LB, Lee's Summit, MO

Commitment List: From to and possibly

Spoiler!

It's inexcusable that we have 2-3 of the top ten players in the state committed at this point. You put far too much pressure on scouting and player development when you whiff on players you should have little to no trouble getting.
I think they intentionally look for the diamonds in the rough. It's just the way Pinkel and his staff do things, they recruit 2 or 3 star athletes and then coach them up. I wish they would sprinkle in a few more 4 or 5 stars here and there though.

Frankly, I'm much more focused on how we are recruiting in Florida and Georgia than how we are doing in Missouri. Frankly, Missouri just doesn't produce that many elite college football players.
No. Heavens no. This is the only state where we have the opportunity to get in on the DGB's of the world. We ain't ever pulling them from anywhere else. The best MO talent has to be the backbone of this program and then augment it w/ guys from elsewhere.

http://rivals.yahoo.com/missouri/foo...mpIazf.YwYs5B4

Failing to shut the borders down is one of the big things holding Pinkel back. We all thought we were going to be coach shopping this Christmas. This regime has been very iffy overall w/ a smattering of high points among what's been a mostly mediocre 13 years.

No they don't they settle for them when they miss out on the other guys.

To their credit they do a good enough job evaluating and developing kids that they've been able to survive in spite of the shortcomings in recruiting.

And really that's all they've done is survive. 0 league titles.

Am I thrilled with this season? You bet your bottom $. It has been a blast. But I'm not ignoring or glossing over the problems. I'm not saying you were or are but am just throwing that out there in case someone reads this and gets the wrong idea.

I completely agree.

You're not going to go in to Georgia or Florida and pull out a 5 star or even many 4 stars.

If Mizzou's going to develop a championship caliber program, it's going to do it on the backs of a few 4 and 5 star MO kids and some surplus 3-star guys from the other states that we simply out-scouted big programs for or did a great job of developing.

We're not going to beat GA and FL by using the guys they decided they didn't want. We absolutely have to lock down MO and Missouri absolutely produces enough talent to build the bedrock for a winner.

MO is surprisingly a really great football recruiting area and MU, IMO, absolutely has to have a firm grip on the state. They aren't going to completely hit on every 5 star kid, but there are too many Donald Stephenson, FB from OU who I'm blanking on etc type kids that they've missed on.

You're thinking Millard - you really can't hold that one against MU.

He wanted to play FB (who the hell wants to play FB?!?!) and we don't use one. He went to the best school in the area to play FB in and had a great career there.

He made the right choice for him and Mizzou. We tried to convince him to play LB and he just didn't want to. !@#$ happens - what the hell would MU have benefited by bringing the guy in as a FB, burying him on the depth chart as a situational HB and souring their relationship with a local highschool?

There are some pretty bad misses in Columbia, but Millard's not one of them.

Thats what I'm saying, there are going to be guys like that who leave MO for some reason or another. YOu aren't getting them all. Win some lose some.

I have no idea why he would want to go play FB, but surprisingly, he's probably going to be playing football on Sundays playing FB, so more power to him I guess.

I'm not sure if this is right or not, but IMO, MU doesn't get it's fair share of kids from the KC area as they should. Again, maybe I'm off base there, but it seems they lose kids from this area alot.

The only states that definitively produce more DI talent than Missouri are California, Texas, Florida, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Ohio, Louisiana, Virginia and Mississippi.

It's on a similar tier w/ South Carolina, Alabama, and Illinois.

You can build a top 20 program just from locking the state down.

Nobody's saying they have to get every MO kid they offer. We can explain away every miss if we effort to do so. It is just undeniable that they are not doing a good enough job when evaluated comprehensively.

Missouri does well in KC. They suck hind tit in St. Louis, and have in both major sports for decades. I've heard scuttlebutt as to why, but I don't have any definitive answers.

And Missouri should get at least 70% of the top 10 in state every year.

They should.

I don't know why I feel that way, they've got some really good players from KC. I guess due to the numbers it produces, some are going to get away.

2 and 3 aren't coming to Missouri for very different reasons. Peavy's parents are HUGE Hog fans which plays a key role. Harrison, IIRC, likely won't play football at all once he's drafted for MLB. I'm guessing Mizzou will "recruit" these guys, but I doubt they put as much emphasis on either one. Bauer, Johnson, Smith, and Wallace are all in play, with Smith being the most likely to commit soon (if the staff still wants him). Bauer has a significant injury (a la Nick) that is difficult to project.

Good or bad, the coaches have their own evaluation system and stick to it. A good measure for how effective that system really is is when Rivals does their re-ranking of classes.

Pieces like this one published today are also relevant:

Missouri star comes out of nowhere

Through seven games of his redshirt senior season, defensive end Michael Sam of Missouri has suddenly become a player to watch for NFL scouts. He proved that yet again on Saturday against Florida, when he added three more sacks to raise his season total to nine.

Sam entered this season as the most experienced defensive lineman for the Tigers, with 38 games of experience, 17 career tackles for a loss and 9.5 sacks. As a redshirt freshman in 2010 he showed off his potential by finishing the season with 24 tackles, 3.5 sacks, seven tackles for a loss, two forced fumbles and one interception. He again showed flashes of that potential in both the 2011 and 2012 seasons, but has truly come into his own this fall.

Recruiting was a gradual process for Sam, who played his high school football at Hitchcock High School in Texas. His first three offers came in from Arizona State , Houston and Colorado State, but even with these offers, Sam held Texas A&M in high regard and considered them his favorite. With an offer from the Aggies not arriving, Sam turned his attention to other schools and named Colorado State his favorite during the summer prior to his senior season. An offer and resulting official visit to Iowa State turned Sam's attention to the Cyclones, however that changed after Gene Chizik left Ames. After this change, Sam named Arizona State and Colorado State his top two schools and took official visits to both. With Missouri offering Sam in January, he decided to hold off on a commitment and take an official visit to Columbia on the last weekend prior to National Signing Day. The following day he committed to Missouri and signed with the Tigers a couple of days later.

Sam was a two-star recruit in the Class of 2009, and not ranked nationally, at his position or in Texas. Prior to this season, Sam was playing in the three-star range but he has stepped up his game immensely and has been a huge reason for the Tigers surge in the SEC. We missed on this one.
