2012 Kansas City Royals Repository Thread

2012 Slogan: Our Time

A better, more accurate 2012 Slogan: It is Finally Next Year
(from Great Expectations)

An alternative slogan if you don't like that one: Someone has to win this crappy division
(from alnorth)

With the beginning of a new year, it is time for the 2012 version of the Royals Repository Thread. We've got Hosmer, we've got a 2011-dominating Gordon, we've got Moose, we've got hopefully a killer bullpen, we've got a stereotypical slow slugging DH, we've got easily one of the best defensive shortstops in the AL, we've got a promising catcher in Salvador Perez. Hell, we've got offense and promising prospects galore.

We do not have starting pitching.

Oh yeah, we've also got this:

Get ready for, (as of January 2012 anyway), one of the most confusing puzzles of a baseball season in recent Royals history. Will they suck? Maybe, I don't know. Will we be given a year of 0.500 baseball? Possibly, I don't know. Will they win the division and go to the playoffs for the first time in 27 years? For the first time in a long time, it could happen, I don't know. 92 losses, 92 wins, or anything in between would not surprise a lot of us.

Everything goes here except Gameday threads and really big news. If a giant story breaks, the Royals achieve some awesome milestone, or we sign/lose a highly significant player/coach/mascot/whatever, then it might also deserve its own thread. This being Chiefs Planet, please do not clutter the board with new threads about trivial Royals news or you will only annoy those who come here for just Chiefs football. If you aren't sure and its not a Gameday thread, it goes here.

What sort of stuff often goes here? SPchief explained it well, so I'll just copy that:

Quote:
If you locate something of interest.. ANYTHING.. deals on apparel, best ways in/out of the stadium, giveaways, great stories from this season or from seasons gone by, rumors, trades, anything.... feel free to post it here.

With Greinke, they COULD offer him what he wants, but I don't think they trust him for the type of commitment that he'd require.

The Royals have to make a few moves, acquire a few starters (2 legit, 1 lotto ticket). But it's not a "Greinke and Hamels or nothing" proposition.
I'm simply stating what they should do. Not what I actually expect. I fully anticipate complete disappointment. Something along the lines of jurrgens.

Gotcha.

I don't think spending $50 million/year on two free agent pitchers is what they SHOULD do, but I wouldn't complain.

The sad thing is, all they NEED to do is spend about half of that in FA, and they are unlikely to even do that. That's why I'm so gung-ho for acquiring a pitcher via trade.

Still hearing a lot of Garza/Royals buzz, though. After looking at next year's draft class, I'd be all for swapping the comp pick as part of a package for Garza. The draft is really weak (comparable to this season).

Re: The A's...

Beane has finally cobbled together a halfway decent team again. I'm not sure they're for real, or if the current hot streak makes them look better than they are (20 games ago, they were basically in the same spot as the Royals).

Cespedes looks like a wise buy, and Reddick has been much better than expected. The rest of that O is pretty 'meh.'

Just not sure they're going to hit enough to get it done, or that it's sustainable. And they're going to lose McCarthy after this season, in all likelihood.

I couldn't care less how they are doing it, or whether it's sustainable - they are getting it done. If this Organization and Fan Base were nearing August 1/2 game out of the lead, we would be drowning ourselves in our own cum right now.

Our process DOESN'T WORK. Our Owner DOESN'T CARE. Our GM is a FREE AGENT reerun. We are 5+ years into the Dayton Moore project and we still don't have a legit #1 or 2 starter either thru the Minor League system or Free Agency. THAT is ****ing BS.

Also throwing a high-80s, two-plane slider with late break. Nasty.

Chi -

I wouldn't argue with any of that (except maybe the FA reerun piece, but Dayton is SO loyal to "his" guys - Frenchy, Kendall, Colon, etc. I won't belabor the point).

Just was saying that I think the A's current hot streak is going to end, and they'll slip back out of the WC consideration.

I guess my thing is that I won't be satisfied with pushing all in for one year. The foundation is in place to build this into a long-term winner, and it is within the self-identified financial constraints to make it a winner by buying a few free agent starters or trading some minor league surplus for one and signing another.

I'm with Deez. If they DON'T make some major moves in the offseason to take advantage of this, I am giving up on the Royals ever being anything but lightning in a bottle during the Glass era.

I'll still watch. I'll still occasionally go to games. But I'm not going to care like I do now.

And if I'm saying that... things are bad.

I have been looking at 2013 as the year everything really starts to pay off for quite some time. So Moore has this offseason to keep me from abandoning his ship. I've got the life vest on. The winch is turned on and ready to lower the ship into the water. Only a last-minute course correction will keep me on board.

Sorry

I had the whole Family at the game yesterday. Just completely disgusted with this Organization. I'm absolutely cold to any and all excuses. ****ing WAH! It's been 27 years since we made the Playoffs. 27 years? Are you kidding me?

Enough already with Our Time. **** that, how about, Playoff's or Glass and Moore Die. That's something I can rally around. Either way, the Fan's win.

No argument with anything Chi and duncan are saying. That's where I'm at, too.

All season I was saying I knew we just needed to stay with Detroit and not worry about Cleveland and Chicago. Now Detroit is leading the division.

I would say the primary difference between the A's and the Royals is clear: the A's have the ability to identify and develop major league pitching where the Royals have the ability to identify and develop major league hitters. However, pitching once again proves that it trumps offense.

Goldberg on 810 with hard-hitting analysis. Believes the biggest missing component with the Royals offense is a "productive" 3 hitter.

Palm in the face.

That too. Look: I don't begrudge Goldberg as long as he sticks to what he knows: sitting in the stands reporting on fans and baseball trivia. However, this is a guy who values RBIs as a measure of player effectiveness, so lets not get too carried away.

On a positive note, both Fangraphs and Baseball Reference agree that Frenchy is well below replacement level and enjoying the worst season of his career.

Congrats, Frenchy! Come on out and Thursdays, fans, and snap up those Frenchy Quarter t-shirts!

For as woeful as the "Our Time" slogan has become, the Frenchy promotion is arguably worse.
