NJ traded a 2nd rounder and defenseman Yegor Rykov for NYR winger Michael Grabner.

Devils and Rangers make a trade for the first time ever. I'm actually surprised this is the trade they made. On the surface, I don't love it as a Devils fan. I'm not thrilled to give up a 2nd rounder. I don't know what Rykov is really going to be so I can't worry too much about that. I do think a potential line of Bratt, Zacha, and Grabner could be pretty lethal.

In the end, it's just a rental though, which makes the 2nd round pick tough to swallow. They did get better though and it's nice to see them actually in the hunt for a change.

The Leafs traded for Grabner to drop a bunch of contracts and hopefully flip him for picks during their "tank" year. No one wanted him, let alone was anyone willing to give up a 2nd for him.
He had like 60 breakaways and missed every shot. He seemed to find his scoring touch with NYR and he's going to add even more speed to that NJ line-up but a 2nd for a rental? The Devils better be gunning for a cup this year.

That's the issue. The devils are a team that can pull an upset. I really believe that. They have played the top teams great this year. But they are too young for me to think they can do that four times.

So if they aren't winning why are we giving up a second and rykov who some think could be a 2-4 dman in this league for two months of grabner. Rykov could bust or not even come over at all but this is too much. And to help out the rangers, a team I actually hate more than the broncos as insane as that sounds (due to me living among them), I can't stomach helping them.

Grabner also is shooting way out of his head and that will drop eventually. He is a great fit for this team but if he doesn't resign this isn't good. Shero has been fantastic with trades so I guess I have to trust him and his assessment of rykov. If the devils are not the fastest team in the league I'm not sure who is. Wood and grabner together would be outrageous.

Oh yeah, I forgot about Rykov. So that's basically 2 seconds for Grabner. Ouch.
6'2" 216 lbs LD playing well in the KHL. He's probably 2/3 years away from the NHL.
My guess is the Devils think they have a 3 year window, (including this season), to be really competitive considering their cap situation. Meanwhile, if the Rangers are truly rebuilding as they've said, it will take 2/3 years to come back to respectability. I'd like to say this deal makes sense for both sides, but 2 seconds for Grabner is still a bit too rich for my blood.

Grabner is the perfect rental for the Devils. Didn't break the bank but got a guy as productive as a Brassard/Nash/Kane, for a much lesser price.

He fits in there well. Just stick him on whatever line and he'll give you 20 goals and dangerous PKing

I'd say there's a good chance Grabner signs there, as well. Devils have plenty of cap space, and he doesn't have to uproot his life.
