Neighborhood watch captain shoots innocent black youth and doesn't even get arrested

http://news.yahoo.com/family-florida...044537742.html

ORLANDO, Florida (Reuters) - The family of a 17-year-old African-American boy shot to death last month in his gated Florida community by a white Neighborhood Watch captain wants to see the captain arrested, the family's lawyer said on Wednesday.

Trayvon Martin was shot dead after he took a break from watching NBA All-Star game television coverage to walk 10 minutes to a convenience store to buy snacks including Skittles candy requested by his 13-year-old brother, Chad, the family's lawyer Ben Crump said.

"He was a good kid," Crump said in an interview, adding that the family would issue a call for the Watch captain's arrest at a news conference on Thursday. "On his way home, a Neighborhood Watch loose cannon shot and killed him."

Trayvon, who lived in Miami with his mother, had been visiting his father and stepmother in a gated townhome community called The Retreat at Twin Lakes in Sanford, 20 miles north of Orlando.

As Trayvon returned to the townhome, Sanford police received a 911 call reporting a suspicious person.

Although names are blacked out on the police report, Crump and media reports at the time of the shooting identified the caller as George Zimmerman who is listed in the community's newsletter as the Neighborhood Watch captain.

Without waiting for police to arrive, Crump said, Zimmerman confronted Trayvon, who was on the sidewalk near his home. By the time police got there, Trayvon was dead of a single gunshot to the chest.

"What do the police find in his pocket? Skittles," Crump said. "A can of Arizona ice tea in his jacket pocket and Skittles in his front pocket for his brother Chad."

Zimmerman could not be reached for comment on Wednesday evening at a phone number listed for him on the community's newsletter.

Crump said the family was concerned that police might decide to consider the shooting as self defense, and that police have ignored the family's request for a copy of the original 911 call, which they think will shed light on the incidents.

"If the 911 protocol across the country held to form here, they told him not to get involved. He disobeyed that order," said Ryan Julison, a spokesman for the family.

"He (Zimmerman) didn't have to get out of his car," said Crump, who has prepared a public records lawsuit to file on Thursday if the family doesn't get the 911 tape. "If he never gets out of his car, there is no reason for self-defense. Trayvon only has skittles. He has the gun."

Since Trayvon, a high school junior who wanted to be a pilot, was black and Zimmerman is white, Crump said race is "the 600 pound elephant in the room."

"Why is this kid suspicious in the first place? I think a stereotype must have been placed on the kid," Crump said.

Common sense?

There had been multiple break-ins involving black criminals in the prior days\weeks leading up to the incident.

In an incident just prior to the shooting Zimmerman witnessed someone peering into a window and called the police. They were slow to arrive and the person got away. I believe this is what motivated Zimmerman to get out of the car and possibly try to detain Trayvon.

If you dig to the FINAL RESULT of all the charges he has had in his life you will see he is not nowhere near as bad as the media has made him out to be.

That cop thing in the bar was completely dropped and Judges don't cut people any slack when it comes to assaulting a cop.

Maybe he smacked his old lady around, maybe he didn't... Alot of men get accused of this and are only defending themselves , do I know this as a fact? No but shit happens.

I'm just curious if Thatpillowbitergot or anyone in the Cump / Martin camp would assign even say 10% or 25% of the blame to Trayvon MArtin for assaulting GZ. Or in their minds is it 100% GZ's fault?

3- does the fact that Martin had zero legal right to be on that property have any bearing at all on your opinion?
4- you say Zimmerman had no reason at all to approach him, do you not think Martin had anything to do with atleast some of the recent burglaries, given that he'd been caught with stolen jewelry and a pry bar?
5- if someone caught you on their private property, would you feel entitled to be angry when they ask you what you're doing there?
1. How do you know for a fact that he wasn't.
2. How do you kow for a fact that he would have?
3. Does the fact that Zimmerman had no legal right to stop any colored youth no matter who's property they were on at the time have any bearing in your opinion?
4. You say Trayvon had no business being on that property when he used it frequently to cut through for other purposes be that school, just getting around or whatever his cause was. Also the Miami Dade Police Department said that the jewelry found in his backpack couldn't match any reports of stolen jewelry so your point is invalid and left to assumption.
5. If you were a kid, did you ever cut through private property as a kid? I'm pretty sure I did not knowing it most of the time but also because nobody ever called me on it and I was gone quickly and on my way. So what you're saying is that Trayvon lost his life for trespassing? A misdemeanor at worst.

It depends which side your on how you want to spin it. Obviously the people who don't give a shit about a teenager dying to the hands of an overweight chicken shit of a "neighborhood watchman" that he was. Where's the responsibility for owning a gun anymore? I believe in the right to bare arms but just as it can be used to save lives it can be used to take them as well. You really think Trayvon Martin would've killed Zimmerman? With his bare hands? Why was Zimmerman getting his ass kicked when he had a good 75-100 lbs on this kid? He's a bitch, that's why.

It's easy to take a life with a gun, that's the pussy way out when you started the engagement in the first place. Guns can be used for protection alot of the times, but then again they can be used to shoot up a school, a movie theater, a mall, or a black youth. Zimmerman might have not been guilty of manslaughter, but he's guilty of making a decision that wasn't his to make. Not only did he stop a youth when the police told him not to TWICE, but he also sought out trouble when there was none to seek out.

This is a life we're talking about, a human life, and it's all fine and dandy if on a message board it gets discarded and made a mockery of (honestly I would expect no less from some people on here) but if that were my son, which he would be white, I'd be pretty distraught at the moment. The best tweet I saw on this, amongst all the rampage and jokes last night, was something to the tune of "Wouldn't it have been nice if George Zimmerman would've offered Trayvon a ride home to get out of the rain instead of doing what he did?" It's a nice thought to think that tragedy could be avoided with kindness instead of suspicion. That a man would want to help troubled youths, instead of saying because of the garb they wear, they "Always get away with it." The simple fact is that this man took a child's life. He'll have to square up with that someday, and a gun won't get him out of that encounter.

Say what you will, Gravedigger, but the fact of the matter is that a jury found insufficient evidence to convict.

And I have no reason to believe that any of those women had any ulterior motives to rule that way.

As I understand it he was suspended for having a bag with marijuana residue in it at school. He was serving a 10 day out of school suspension. There wasn't enough pot to arrest him. There was THC in his system on the night of his death. Not enough to influence him, but there you go.
