Rage release date draws closer, new vid

I loved Borderlands, this looks similiar with a better art style. I grew up on Doom and Quake so hopefully ID Soft can pull me back in.

From all the videos I've seen on this, it's just another run of the mill shooter with pretty graphics by id. The only way it's similar to Fallout or even Borderlands is that it's set in a post-apocalyptic world.

Oh, and you can race.

Personally I can't get enough of these type of games, and I consider it a plus that ID Software is doing the honors. Some of us love the open world RPG shooter, and I feel there aren't enough games in this genre.

It's not an open world RPG shooter, man. It's just a shooter that is slightly less linear than DOOM 3. If it was an open world RPG shooter, it wouldn't be 7 years behind the industry.

Doom 3 was pure suck, I don't see how this compares to it in anyway.

iD Software are known for making great First Person Shooters, they brought us classic FPS titles like Wolfenstein, Doom and Quake. They created the genre that is arguably the best, and less arguably, the most popular. With games like Call of Duty, Battlefield and Halo selling millions of copies and becoming household names, id’s games are being left behind. The latest versions of their beloved franchises just don’t stand up to the new shooters out there.

Then they told the world about a little game called Rage. You’ve all seen the hilarious Blake Griffin commercial by now, but just what is Rage all about. We know it’s a FPS, but there is alot more to it than that.

Normally you probably wouldn’t think about an id Software game as one with a great story, but not this time. They have setup a story that has us very intrigued and excited to see how it unfolds. The premise is that of real life asteroid Apophis, that is going to pass over earth around 2036. In the fictional world of Rage, the Government creates a program called Eden, where they bury people underground to survive the catastrophe when the asteroid hits. You are a survivor of the program and awaken 100 years later into a world unlike the one you last saw, with mutants running around, groups of factions pulling back and forth for power. You must choose how you want to play, who you side with and what choices your character makes. Having this open society to play with in a post-apocalyptic setting allows the story to be played out through missions that you will receive from NPC’s throughout the world. You have some freedom to explore the world, maybe not quite as much as say Fallout, but a lot more than your typical FPS.

Rage is the first game to run on their latest engine, idTech 5, and it is one of the best looking games we have seen on a console. The graphics in Rage are running at 2x the framerate of other shooters, and it shows. Just watch any of the latest trailers and you’ll see what we mean. Not only does it create a great looking game, idTech 5 utilizes a Megatexture technology which allowed them to create these huge, detailed environments, giving gamers fully unique environments around each corner. id really wanted to focus on the environment as if it was a character in the game and bring the world to life like never before.

Being a FPS, Rage would be nothing without a huge arsenal of weapons, gadgets, and special ammo types for your disposal. There are plenty of standard weapons such as the Shotgun, SMG, Machine Gun, Pistol, and Sniper Rifles, but Rage also includes a few special weapons such as the Crossbow and the Wingstick. The wingstick is one the cooler weapons in Rage, it is a bladed boomarang that has smart nano targetting technology, and with the right timing you can slice enemy heads clean off, before they even know you’re there. You use this on your offhand, so you can throw the Wingstick and then keep shooting while it’s tracking your enemy. The gadgets include a remote control car armed with explosives, turrets, a sentry bot and many others. To be able to use the gadgets you have to find the blueprints and the parts to create them. Different specialty ammo types are available around the Wasteland as well and they serve to give you some extra power. For example; Electric bolts for the crossbow will electricute any enemies in or near a water source, fire rounds light your enemy on fire and explosive rounds, well, blow people up. Much like the recently released Deus Ex Human Revolution, you are free to use whatever combination of weapons and gadgets you want, to decide how you want to play the game. You can play as a badass who just kicks down doors and starts blasting, or you can play with a bit more strategy and use gadgets to help you move a little more silently through the level, adding to the replay value of the game.

Vehicles also play a large role in Rage. There are a few different types of vehicles that you can use for Racing, traveling around the world and to help you in combat while out in the Wasteland. Throughout the game you can upgrade your vehicles, change the paint and equip new weapons on them. Much like Borderlands, vehicles are really important to have in Rage not only to help travel across the large world, but mix up the variety of the gameplay. Vehicles are always fun to use and id really worked hard to create a set of vehicles that were not only fun to use, but ones that actually felt smooth and worth driving. This is key in any form of open world game, and so far the vehicles in Rage look great.

Not only can do all that in the single player campaign, but Rage supports a seperate co-op mode. The co-op mode will allow you play online or offline with a friend. You will play through missions based on stories you heard about during the single player campaign, but didn’t have full missions to complete. The missions will include new backstory, objectives, and secrets allowing you to not only play with a friend, but not just rehash what you already did while playing alone. This is a fresh idea on co-op and sounds like it should be a lot of fun, as long as it isn’t too short like some other co-op modes in recent games (looking at you Two Worlds 2).

Rage also features a robust online competitive multiplayer suite including Team Deathmatch, Capture the Flag and other standard multiplayer modes, is what I would say if that was true, but it’s not. id Software didn’t want to just add in forced or unnecessary multiplayer modes, they wanted to do something new and unique and so they give us Rage Combat Rally. Combat rally is all about vehicles, with modes such as Team Rally, Chain Rally and Vehicle Deathmatch. I’m actually pretty excited to see how this turns out as it sounds like a great idea and not just more of the same multiplayer you would expect to see in a shooter. It will include a full EXP/level progression system to earn new loadouts and unlockables to upgrade your vechicles. With the FPS onslaught that is coming this fall, it’s nice to see a company take a risk and not just play it safe with the online system. How it all turns out in the end, we’ll find out on Oct 4th.

Yeah, so it's pretty much Doom 3 with cars and awesome graphics. There are no RPG elements in the game. You don't level up, you don't get new skills, your stats don't change, there is no loot. You get to chose which rail you're going to take in the campaign and which ammo you like the most. That's the extent of choices the game is going to offer, right? Or is there more?

It's not an RPG, but has some of the elements.

gamescom 2011: Rage - One Hour Hands-on

When it comes to first-person shooters, id Software is usually one of the first companies you think of; and rightly so. With Wolfenstein, Quake, and Doom, they not only created highly-successful franchises, but more than that fathered the entire genre that spawned fan favourites like Halo and Call of Duty. As a result, all eyes now rest on Rage, their newest offspring due in mere weeks. At gamescom 2011 I shot and drove my way through the first hour of the game and even though I only experienced a fraction of what the game had to offer, I can assure you that all the hype is justified.

In the year 2029 a giant asteroid called Apophis has crashed into earth and in that hell has broken loose. Most living things, as a result, have been eradicated. When it became clear that the looming apocalypse was on hand; equipment, data, and people (such as yourself) with special skills were stowed away in “arks” to survive Apophis’ impact and rebuild society afterwards. That didn’t work out too well though and after awakening from cold sleep, you find everyone in your ark dead. So you stumble out into an unknown and hostile post-apocalyptic world where the few inhabitants have organized themselves in clans living by the rule of whoever has the biggest gun. Unfortunately, these people do not like you.

Unsurprisingly, Rage doesn’t take long to toss you a gun and send you out to kill some raging Ghost clan. But it’s much more than a linear and simple straight-forward experience like Call of Duty. While you won’t get lost in smaller fighting areas like the clan’s hideout, you will spend much time on the vast over-world cruising in vehicles getting from one important location to the next. These locations include quest givers, shops, and the aforementioned fighting areas. At the start of the game, the world seems somewhat small, but Tim Willtis, Creative Director of id Software, promised that it will expand within an hour or so into the game after a handful of missions.

The world in Rage is not only large, but also--like everything else--gorgeous. Even though the rig I played on wasn’t the most powerful one, the quality of the graphics was great and nearly flawless. There were only a few rough edges and those were hardly noticeable. And more importantly, the aesthetics are stunning and perfectly fit the setting and mood. If you’re not too much into sandy or brownish colours, the Wasteland might not be your favourite place, but I fell in love with it right away. The enemies are unique and not only do they have very distinctive looks, but also special weaponry and moves. For example, the Ghosts roll and jump around trying to get close to you to slice you apart while other gangs might prefer grenades, burning clubs or a machine gun mounted on a buggy.

But Rage is not only an awesome-looking shooter, it’s also far more than you’d expect from the genre. As we all know, RPG elements make every game better (or so they say) and Rage is no exception to this rule. It doesn’t go with the over-used implementation of a level system for perks, skills, or weapons, but instead it’s basically all the other stuff RPGs are known for. You can accept or decline quests, find additional information or equipment by talking to NPCs, and can spend and make money at shops. This system is especially cool since you can obtain new weapons at your own pace. For instance, if you keep your money together and loot every enemy for coin and ammo, you might be able to afford the assault rifle fairly early in the game; or, you could instead buy a monocular as an upgrade for your pistol--the choice is yours.

Additionally there is the crafting system. While it’s optional early on, Tim told me that later in the game you will be somewhat screwed if you didn’t forge the right items. There are loads of schematics for everything from bandages to auto turrets and bomb cars. To make those, you’ll need ingredients you’ll find all over the world as well as on dead bodies. Since some of those are fairly rare, you’ll need to focus on some of the schematics and by that influence your play style. For example, Tim doesn’t like the cars, so he usually sticks to the turrets--they’re easier to handle.

I’ve only played it for an hour, but I couldn’t find anything I didn’t like about the game. Rage is extremely atmospheric, engaging, and fun without the need for constant action and explosions. This was only the beginning though, so before I start really celebrating the awesomeness that I expect from id and Bethesda, I’ll have to play longer to delve into the grander world.

Accepting/declining missions = RPG? Look man, if you think this game is going to be like Fallout (actual RPG) or Borderlands (FPS Diablo clone), then more power to you. I hope you enjoy the crap out of it.

I think it will be closer to Borderlands without the random loot, It looks similiar to Fallout 3 because of the Atmosphere. No i'm not expecting heavy RPG elements but with the Mod community you never know. It will at the very least tide me over until Skyrim comes out.

Rage preview - PC GAMER
Rich McCormick at 07:03pm September 5 2011

Get in the buggy, it’s not safe here.” Hold on a moment, pal. I’ve just emerged from a cryotube, blinking against the ultra-bright sunlight, into a cracked world a 106 years after I was plucked from it. Let me have a look around first.

Rage starts with a strangely poignant cinematic. A voiceover assures us Earth is about to be rendered uninhabitable by a giant cocking asteroid. But it’s all right for you: as one of humanity’s best and most muscled, you’re to be put in an ‘Ark’ to hang about all frozen until the planet’s sorted itself out. A century later, then, Rage begins.

Raised from the chiller cabinet by a robotic voice, I was allowed out into the wasteland. Stepping into the glare, I was treated to id Tech 5’s version of Oblivion’s sewer exit. The wasteland is combined brown, grey and beige, but it stretches forever – the developers’ new id Tech 5 technology using some magic to keep impressive visual fidelity over vast distances. A gaming diet of Fallouts and Oblivions made me set my target at some far off point, and I started down the bluff I was stood on.

Not five seconds into the walk, I was pinned to the ground by a screaming goon. I let him say his piece – mainly “waaaaah!” – before his head was removed at the neck by a well-placed bullet. As the game raised me back to my feet, I spotted my saviour in a buggy.

He wanted to head up the road to his makeshift house, but I’d been tempted by the lure of the horizon. He could wait. I pottered off past his vehicle, and was about to descend into a ravine when I heard the snap of a rifle. A millisecond later I was sprawled out on the floor, dead for not following orders.

Rage isn’t a true open world game. Creative director Tim Willits instead prefers the term “directed freedom”. I load my last checkpoint. This time when I’m told to get in the buggy, I do so right away

I’m taken up a dusty road to a settlement by the driver, who reveals himself as one Dan Hagar. Other Hagars and their hangers-on mill about his house’s dusty courtyard. They’re only there to add some ambience at first, but later they open up, offering jobs and items. For now, Dan’s the only man in town who needs my services. Ark survivors come pre-loaded with a set of lethal skills, so he hands me a revolver and asks me to go and clear out a nest of bandits.

The bandit nest is a quad-bike ride away from Dan’s homestead. Rage’s roads are short, but easy to navigate – perfect for using the bike’s generous boost. The trip should’ve taken me thirty seconds. Then I discovered that powering my bike fullpelt into a rock launched my screaming character 20 feet over the handlebars.

Five minutes later, I’m done giggling and I’m finally ready to invade the bandit pit – a smashed hotel. The first few rooms are eerily quiet, but soon I meet my first wave of enemies. They are – like the man gurning over my face earlier – freakish, with sticky-out ears and squashed-up heads. But their limited cranial capacity hasn’t reduced their combat skill. Those armed with melee weapons move cleverly: they duck and juke when you bring your gun to bear, moving diagonally to avoid easy headshots. Gun-toting bandits use cover well and seem conscious of their surroundings. They’ll vacate a room if you’ve murdered their buddies, falling back to fortify another section of the map. But I power through and head back to Dan with the news.

He sends me out again, this time with a bigger gun. Solutions in Rage are rarely conversational: the wasteland’s settlers, for their peaceful intentions, are a ruthless lot when it comes to bandits. In this bandit hive – a different group, covered in Union Jacks and speaking in mockney accents – I find myself freewheeling between weapon types. The shotgun and pistol are pure id Software: both kick and snap with every shot. But I have more fun with my newly acquired wingstick. A horrible, triplepointed razor boomerang, the wingstick will take a man’s head off at the neck, and when properly aimed, will return to your hand. In other shooters, I develop a favourite combat tactic and repeat it ad infinitum. In Rage’s semi-dungeons, I constantly flip between all my killy toys.

My adventures in Dan’s land culminated with me receiving the keys to my own buggy. From there, I was able to jet across wider sandy wastes to a township called Wellspring. It quickly became obvious that Rage’s opening two hours are little more than an elongated, enjoyable tutorial. Wellspring was larger, busier and dirtier than the Hagar camp, and its streets were lined with people who wanted me to do something for them, to buy something from them, to hear something from them.

As I pushed further into the game, I saw less of the direction in that ‘directed freedom’. I saw something more exciting, more promising: I saw the freedom.
