Chiefs-related thoughts at the halfway point of the season.

I have many random thoughts, but I'll stick to the ones that are about the Chiefs.

1. At the halfway point, the Chiefs are the #5 seed in the playoffs. Given the early-season schedule, this is a positive surprise. http://www.nfl.com/playoffs/playoff-picture.

2. Right now, the Chiefs are the #3 defense in terms of points allowed. The offense is in the top third, and the special teams are strong. The Chiefs have always been good at putting together one dominating unit while the others were weak, but right now they have one dominating unit and the others are strong.

3. I remember Herm Edwards' stupid statement that the offense was scoring too fast, which hurt the defense. While that statement is stupid, one must note that the offense is really helping the defense this year by keeping them off the field. They're ranked 6th in the league in time of possession.

3. I don't care what some of you say. Alex Smith is good, and I like him. I think he's this generation's Bernie Kosar, a guy who's really good at moving the chains and never making mistakes. But the difference is that Smith can run, and he's far better at that than I would have thought.

4. Dorsey is really good at identifying raw talent. You look at guys like Ron Parker and Knile Davis and Zach Fulton and Josh Mauga and others, and he finds productive players outside the high rounds. That's huge.

5. I think this team has good coaching. You look at how the backups have played, and they're very impressive. They've stepped right in and played great. And we don't see stupid mistakes for the most part. (I'm still laughing about the Santos karate kick, but hey, he's a foreign kicker.)

6. I think Allen Bailey is the breakout player of the year, out of a number of good candidates. Ron Parker might be next for that award, and you could make the case for several players.

7. Jamaal is having the worst season of his career from a YPC perspective, but I remain impressed by how good he is in all phases of the game. He can run, catch, block, hit for power, and hit for average. I'm always in awe of how he can take a situation with no apparent hole and pick up 5+ yards.

8. I l-o-v-e love the three tight end sets. Or two TEs with Bowe. Kelce is such a mismatch for people. The guy is always open. And did people notice the play in (I think) the third quarter where he chipped some defensive end and literally put the guy on his back. And all he did was chip him while going out for a safety valve route. It was hilarious.

9. Zach Fulton deserves some serious props. He stepped in as a rookie and has played like a veteran.

10. Now that the team is good, I find a perverse pleasure in seeing Colquitt punt sometimes. I want to see how close he can put the ball to the goal line.

11. Last season the defense started out strong and the offense weak, and then around Week 8 they flipped. It'll be interesting to see if the same thing happens this year where the offense improves and the defense regresses.

12. A really good receiver in the first round next year seems like an obvious priority, but I'm trying to figure out if it's worth it if Alex doesn't target WRs. That's fine as long as the offense clicks; recall that Trent Green didn't use receivers all that much during his heyday.

13. That little Thomas fellow impresses the heck out of me. He's legitimately both quick AND fast. I don't know if it was mentioned today, but he slipped and fell on one return, and got back to his feet faster than anyone I've ever seen. It was pretty impressive.

We're a team with options on offense now. A couple years ago, it just seemed like Charles and Bowe. Now we have Charles, Davis, Kelce, DAT, Bowe, even Fasano is good for a big reception here and there.

That's impressive. I had glanced at the stats and noticed that the Chiefs had a better point differential than the Broncos, but didn't know they were ranked that high.

You look at the losses, and they were very close to beating the Broncos and played the 49ers close. I have no idea what happened in the Titans game, and that one really hurts.

D.Thomas is a freaking stud!! Knew we had the steal of the draft with him, actually quite impressed with how they've worked him in to the scheme of things. We aren't giving up a whole lot of film for plays with him by over-using them in the regular season. That return he had today was absolutely electric, felt like I was watching a younger, faster Devon Hester which was freaking awesome. Hope he stays healthy.

Might be a little early to say but honestly I think the Chiefs are one of the best in the NFL right now when you look at their resume and execution on both sides of the ball. After the Tennessee loss (Lol wtf was that?) I think a good majority of fans were pegging this as a 5-11, 6-10 season. I'll bet we win 11.

Nice writeup. I'd rep ya but spent it all on today's game rep thread.

The most exciting part of this season you've identified in #4 and #5. As good as we are today, we are going to be better next year. Finding new talent, coaching them up, and having them ready to play.

With the exception of his damn 3 and 1 pass plays. You have Jamaal Charles in your backfield. Run the damn ball.

i agree...i really like this team. I think we actually have a pretty good shot at the superbowl if we can stay healthy. I'm not saying we're perfect but i think we could beat any AFC team. If NE wins homefield advantage in the playoffs maybe we play them as a wildcard. Maybe someone else takes out the Donkeys. just saying...it could happen.

Let's face it, under Reid and Dorsey the Chiefs have become a really good team. What's crazy is that we are only going to get better as we are young team that should have a long window to compete for a championship. We have plenty of home grown talent that we need to keep, and we will have a pile of draft picks to add some much needed depth in the offseason. I'm excited for the future because I think this can be a great team, but heck we are already pretty damn good.

We are on pace to pass for about 3400 yards and rush for 1900.

If Bowe and Kelce keep rolling they might jump over 1000 yards. We have given Jamaal a light load so far, and I hope that translates to health at the end of the year.

I'll add a couple observations, some probably redundent:

  • Kelece has sick potential, that guy is a beast. I hope he stays healthy because he adds a whole other dimension to the offense.
  • In my very short years playing football I played saftey and CB. When did the 'horse collar' officially become an illegal way to tackle? That was my forte' and I remember the coaches saying 'it's legal' after doing it many times. (I made it up to midgets in high school then switched to wrestling if that puts things in perspective)
  • Alex Smith haters can go suck a big rubbery one.
  • Chiefs from GM to water boy are working. This team is working as one.
Fun season.

i too really like where this team is heading. we have the foundation laid to be a winning team for the next several years. i think reid, dorsey, and smith are bringing a winning tradition to the chiefs. we really arent all that far away from being a great team, if we nail this next draft, the nfl better look out.
