Thank you Kansas City

Even though I didn't get a chance to meet any Planeteers in person, I wanted to say thank you to your city for its hospitality and splendour. My wife, daughter, and I arrived in KC Saturday and stayed at the Marriot Courtyard Hotel. Awesome building, even though my daughter thought it was haunted. We wandered through the plaza, and ended up waiting an hour and a half for Jack Stack BBQ. We sat next to a bunch of Steelers, including LeVeon Bell, who acted like complete douches. Wouldn't even get their pics taken with rabid Steeler fans wishing them all the best (ok…D. Wiliams said yes to ONE) The food was great and we loved the architecture of the buildings. Could easily live there, and I live in one of the most beautiful cities in the world. The people were fantastic and the best part was Arrowhead. We sat in the middle section of the stadium which was fantastic. Watching the Chiefs beat Pittsburgh was great and seeing Berry get an interception was icing on the cake. We will come back for sure…see you the next time around. Cheers! CanadaKC

In in sense it is. But since that rod on the left terminates at the beam, as does the rod on the right, the load it is carrying transfers through the beam to the nut on the right.

Using one rod, the weight of the floor below is carried in the body of the rod, and the nut only has to hold up the weight of one floor.

It's similar to the principle whereby using a series of pulleys distributes a load on the end so you can move much more by pulling on the other end of the rope than if you were just trying to lift the object alone.

Damn man, making me choke here. This is hip, rep to you. I've been gone from home now for 33 years , only to visit when I get a chance.

I have been missing home now for 33 years and counting!

It really was THIS simple

There was a change order the architect and structural engineer both deny that they authorized the design change. That architectural firm and engineering firm are both out of business. The lead architect lost his license and I believe a structural engineer did also. The steel constructor Haven Steel is still in business doing iron work all over the country.

I was a young instrument operator and our survey crew was selected by the National Bureau of Standards to precisely survey and measure the collapsed skywalks so they could determine the present state and degree of bends of the anchors, failure points and degree of bends the box beams. Every piece of debris was measured so it could be reconstructed off site and recreate the collapse.

One thing I have seen over the years working with construction contractors and Iron workers is they know what works and what doesn't. I have no doubt in my mind these guys knew this wouldn't fly and most likely let the there feeling be known. But as always what would they know over book smart engineers. Fell on deaf ears no doubt.

If my memory serves me I believe both the Architect and the Engineer signed and sealed that change order thus sealing there fate.

I liked the cheesy corn - I've only been there once and it was with Claynus. The smoked meats were meh IMO.

I don't think the engineer/contractor divide is as bright a line in the blame game as you think.

The design team turned plans over to a replacement team. The contractors complained that threading support nuts onto one long rod would be more labor and potential damage intensive than threading nuts on shorter runs on more rods.

The new design team didn't realize that the turned over plans were preliminary and didn't do due diligence on the stress calculations. Therefore they underestimated the additional stress imposed by the proposed design change and signed off on it.

In short, if the same engineers had remained on the project and had they insisted on their initial design, it would have held by the good fortune that their design was robust enough. But the design and implementation teams changed, they didn't understand the underlying physics of the design, and therefore didn't register the load dynamics of their proposed change. And don't forget, the design change was demanded by the contractor on cost/benefit basis.

Here is a picture of the beam at the spot where the nut winnowed through the eyelet, leading to collapse.

I was just in KC too. Tried Joe's one night and Jack stack the next. Both were good but Joe's was better.

Joe's burnt ends were awesome. They make a damn good onion ring too.

Damn I wish I wasn't 1100 miles from Joe's
