Royals want Hochevar to start Sunday against As
By BOB DUTTON The Kansas City Star OAKLAND, Calif. | The Royals plan to recall right-hander Luke Hochevar from Class AAA Omaha to replace ailing John Bale as the starting pitcher for Sunday’s series finale against the Oakland A’s. Manager Trey Hillman confirmed the club’s plans before Saturday’s game at McAfee Coliseum. Hillman did not reveal the accompanying roster move required to add Hochevar to the active roster. That decision will come Sunday. Hochevar, 24, was 1-1 with a 2.60 ERA in three starts at Omaha. He allowed five earned runs and 11 hits in 17 1/3 innings while striking out 12 and walking six. He pitched six shutout innings in his last start Tuesday at Nashville. The Royals appear to have several options to clear space for Hochevar, including: • Designate veteran Hideo Nomo for assignment. Nomo has been hit hard in each of his three relief appearances, allowing nine runs and 10 hits in just 4 1/3 innings. • Option reliever Joel Peralta back to Omaha. Peralta only arrived Thursday, when he replaced Bale on the active roster. Peralta looked sharp in retiring four straight hitters in Friday’s 13-2 loss to the A’s. • Option reliever Yasuhiko Yabuta to Omaha. Yabuta threw just seven strikes in 26 pitches Friday while walking four and allowing five runs in two-third of an inning. Hochevar was the first overall pick in the 2006 draft and made four September appearances last season for the Royals. He was 0-1 and allowed three earned runs and 11 hits in 12 2/3 innings. Bale was placed on the disabled list Thursday because of a fatigued left shoulder after going 0-3 and allowing 13 runs and 25 hits in 15 1/3 innings. He is eligible to return May 1.
