One of the dumbest baserunning blunders in baseball history
http://mlb.mlb.com/video/play.jsp?co...16825&c_id=mlb
In case that link doesn't work, or you don't want to click on it, Brewers are batting with 1 out, Segura at first. 1) Segura steals second 2) Braun walks 3) Segura takes off for third too early, pitcher throws to third and Segura is stuck in the middle. 4) According to basic baseball 101, Braun now needs to run for second, and he does 5) Segura runs back to second. Both runners are at second, the defense tags both of them. (Segura came off the bag and got tagged, but the ump missed that. Oh well, moving on) 6) According to the rules, when two runners are on the same base and get tagged, the preceding runner is safe, and the trailing runner is out. So, Braun is out. 7) Segura, thinking he's out, starts trotting back to the 1st base dugout. The first base coach yells at him to stop at first. (the rules forbid running the bases backwards to "confuse the defense" or to "make a travesty of the game", but if you are just a confused moron, you can pretty much run in any direction you want) 8) Next pitch, Segura tries to steal second again, gets caught stealing. |

I'd love to see what the guy writing the descriptions for the Gameday site came up with for that cluster****.

The computers which generate play-by-play and box scores are literally unable to process the possibility of a guy at second winding up back at first. Most of the box scores say Braun got thrown out stealing second and then Segura got thrown out stealing third, but thats obviously not right.

A guy named Germany Schaefer was "famous" for "stealing" first. With a runner on 3rd, he would try take off for 2nd, hoping for a throw that would let the runner on 3rd score. If the catcher didn't throw, he would "steal" 1st on the next pitch and try again. Ty Cobb was known to try this as well. |

The rules actually say running backwards would "make a travesty of the game?"

No. It says that if the reason why you are running backwards is to make a travesty of the game, you are out.

It seems like it would be -1 runs if you run the bases backwards.

Heh. I'm not sure how the ump missed Segura getting tagged out. Hell, one of the other umps should have seen it, too.

I still wish someone had a highlight reel of all of Ken Harvey's blunders.
