Here is why I think Geno is the pick regardless of the compensation we gave up for Alex...

I'm as big a Geno fan as there is on this board, but I also saw that he seemed to have a hard time with retaining the play Mariucci gave him and Mooch runs a WCO like Reid does. The terminology is long winded and with Geno coming from a simple to learn system like the air raid, that has color coded play calls, I have doubts Geno would be best served to play right away.

We have a lot of high picks that are coming into their primes and we needed to have a guy that fills multiple roles. We need a leader, a guy that knows the offense and has a history of being not only a good player, but a good mentor/teacher. A guy that can come in and play a year or two while helping groom a high pick...but helping us win games in the meantime. Alex Smith is the perfect fit for one of our three quarterback spots going into 2013.

Alex Smith starts 2013 and possibly 2014. Hence the 2 year contract staying put and no extension.
Geno Smith sits the first year and has to win a competition in 2014 to start....maybe he is ready to come in and has full control of the offense by that time, maybe not....if he needs more time, Alex Smith is good enough to keep the wheel steady till he is.

I doubt very highly that Alex Smith is here AFTER the next two seasons.

This same thinking applies to the other viable choice for QB at 1.1: Matt Barkely. He actually might need a year to sit, what with his shoulder injury and all.

I can't believe I'm going to trick myself into thinking that a 1st round selection of QB is still possible.

So we gave up two 2nd round picks (one of them is basically 1 first round pick) for a starter to start for only 1 season?

If they plan on Alex smith is the guy going forward they would extend his contract.

I have decided to retain some element of hope in all of this.

They might look at Geno and say "this kid can be Aaron Rodgers or he could be Tim Couch" and decided to hedge their bets by double dipping on quarterbacks.

That's not all we get from this scenario, though.

It's like putting insurance on your hand in case the dealer has blackjack....or hedging your bets....or diversifying bonds.

Maybe Alex takes a step forward in his career and gets us deep in the layoffs...great, we can extend him and move Geno for a pick or two in a couple years...maybe Alex can't handle the fact that he will need to throw more (3:16 in games throwing 35 or more times) and totally busts and needs replaced by mid season.

Drafting Geno Smith in today's NFL is a smart mans pick.

If we do that, we are still spending less than the Redskins did on RG3 and Cousins.

This is the best endorsement that there is for taking QB at 1.1 even after the Alex Smith trade. This argument right here is the tops.

Yep.

Agreed.

And Smith/Barkley Smith is probably as good as RG3 cousins

That's a HUGE part of my theory.

TBG says no extension is being discussed.

The fact that they reportedly want to wait and see Alex Smith play a year on his current deal is somewhat telling. It's also smart.

It's also a move Pioli didn't make/couldn't make. Since Cassel was tagged, IIRC, we had to have a contract ready for him if we traded.

1. Is that any less weird or wasteful than drafting a LT at #1 overall and having him sit for a year? It's one thing to do that with a QB, quite another to do it with a LT.

2. Alex Smith is the insurance policy. An expensive one, but a good one. He gets one or two seasons to prove his worth. What if he wins a Super Bowl for us in that time? Very likely we would keep Alex and trade away Geno. Waste of a #1 overall pick, but WHO ****ING CARES? WE WON THE SUPER BOWL! HYYEEEARARRRGH!!! If you're going to spend that many resources to line your ducks up in a row like that, better to do it for the QB position above any other.

Eh, I don't think so. I think to trade a franchised player he has to have a contract in place with said team. Could be wrong though.

I highly doubt that if Joeckel/Fisher was at the top of the Chiefs' board as the BEST PLAYER AVAILABLE that they would have bothered to tag Albert.

Otherwise, it's a $9.5 million game of chicken.
