Pat Kirwan NFL.com writer on the Chiefs

Eric Hicks is a defensive end that was shown the door by the Chiefs. The team gets a $2.9 million credit for his salary, which wasn't guaranteed, but the Chiefs still owe $2.2 million for uncharged bonuses, so they get a $700,000 gain to the salary cap. Hicks didn't start a game in 2006 and only had seven tackles, but some might have thought the suspension of Jared Allen might have saved him. It didn't happen. He just passed his 30th birthday, and so the veteran minimum is probably his best option.

Ryan Sims has to be considered a first-round disappointment at defensive tackle, and the drafting of Turk McBride and Tank Tyler spelled the end for Sims. There's no way a guy with seven tackles in 2006 and a $1.9 million salary is going to be on the Chiefs roster in 2007. His trade returns the Chiefs another $700,000 of salary cap space, which combined with Hicks is a nice $1.4 million of new space minus any roster bonuses paid.

Keep in mind that teams do not want to enter their post-draft minicamp or the remaining OTAs with players they do not intend to keep on the roster, so now is the time to release them or trade them -- which leads me to the final thought of the day.

What if Trent Green shows up at the Chiefs facility and starts working out in the weight room, running some conditioning drills and suiting up for the minicamp. Will he force the issue to be traded more by doing that then by sitting at home waiting for a trade to the Dolphins? Remember how the Steve McNair situation escalated when he was turned away at the front door of the Titans facility? On April 3, 2006, he was told to leave the facility; one month later he agrees to terms with the Ravens (provided he is traded); on June 1 the arbitrator agrees with McNair. Green already has agreed to terms with the Dolphins if he is traded. The next two weeks will be interesting in this situation.
