Anything can happen. (After their previous obligations are filled)

I don't think ND will ever give up their independent status, though.

They're not gonna have a choice. Even if they don't do a conference champion provision, with the Big10/Pac10 scheduling alliance, a likely SEC/Big12 alliance, they won't have the ability to continue to schedule the games they've always scheduled and have a strong enough profile to get into the top 4 without being in a conference.

Actually, I gotta correct something, their NBC contract runs through 2015. They aren't actually free until 2016. Their football team has no value to us until then.

Notre Dame can't just rip up their NBC contract and say "never mind", there would be 4 years worth of huge liquidated damages to pay. We're sure as hell not going to pay that for them.

Notre Dame can't abruptly quit 16 games with less than 2 years notice (presuming none of the 2015 teams have a problem with it), leaving those teams high and dry with no other reasonable option for an OOC game. Every single one of those schools are going to sue for big money. We're sure as hell not going to pay that for them.

I mean, sure if someone wants to open their wallet and start shelling out at least $40-50MM to NBC, and who knows how much to tons of schools, then yeah "anything can happen", but that would be really stupid, and unnecessary if they are legally bound to the Big 12 for 9 years starting in 2016.

The Big 12 would have no problem with Notre Dame bringing their NBC contract with them. Funny how what was once seen as something that hampered the conference is now a strength.

Then again some of us were saying how great it was to collect your own third tier rights since the beginning.

That's a great idea.

They can join the Big XII in football and share the tier 1 money but not actually play any games against Big XII teams. Everything you say is smart.

That is really silly.

Do you think Notre Dame will fall apart and be a worthless football team with no value in 2016? Why in the hell would you say "oh never mind, we'll call you in 2016, and THEN we'll sign you up", why not lock them in now, for 2016?

Seems like a bunch of internet e-pride that ignores the reality.

If they will ink the deal now, you take it and don't cut them in on the tier 1 earnings until then. If you want to meet them half way, you can put them into your bowl rotation somehow.

So, you are saying that it is IMPOSSIBLE for Notre Dame to go to the Big 12 after their obligations are fulfilled?

Wow, just wow.

I think he's saying that they have no desire to rip up their NBC deal now or in 2016 or ever. They want to drink free milk without the hassle that comes with cow ownership just like they have been doing with the Big East.
