Off Season Lets Talk Guns

Been a while since we had a guns n' ammo discussion.

Some of you are AR shooters Im sure. Im looking at a Colt 6920. Will be my first AR. Picked up a Glock this fall and really enjoy shooting it. Any feedback on that weapon?

Anyone else been in a buy/sell/trade mood with hardware?

That's cool. I have always thought Colt made great firearms so when I was told that it definately surprised me.

So what is the difference between the AR15, M4, Colt A2, etc? They all look the same and seem to be .223 caliber.

If they are all milspec then fundamentally 95+% of the parts will be interchangeable. I believe some of the colts have larger pivot and takedown pins which prevent them from being 100% compatible. But most of the AR-15(semi-auto M16 which all of them fall into) can fully swap parts. That's why I have fun building mine rather than buying off the shelf. You get to cherry pick which parts go into the gun. AR-15s in rifles and 1911s in pistols both allow a TON of customizations if you want.

Interestingly enough while the AR-15 platform is almost 100% standard the AR-10 platform is fairly fragmented. Part of the reason I got the AR-15 was all of the support. I'm planning to have multiple uppers, 5.56, 22LR, .410, 5.7x28, and likely a .50 WSSM variant(but you have to reload that).

What is 50 WSSM ?
When you jump to bigger cal;s like 243, 308,25-05 ,30-06. AR-15 lowers will not work.
You now will need AR-10 lower with an upper in what ever cal you chose.

....yes yes I am...why? Because I can... I've actually been a big fan of the WSSM case because it's a great case and cut down it fits right into the AR mag AND if you chop the neck it's exactly a .50 which makes reloading simpler.

It's not out yet currently two groups are working on something similar. The biggest available WSSM wildcat is 358. Delta arms is working on the .50 Hushpuppy.

http://www.deltacompanyarms.com/CURRENT_PROJECTS.html

A group associated with olympic arms is building either a 458 or .50 WSSM variant. The 458 obviously has better bullet selection, but the .50 will be easier to reload(since you just chop the wssm case for easier brass). Plus the .50 is just sexier! Too bad 50BMG bullets can't fit in the AR15 mag.

I love it.

I just watched a demo on a M-16 .50 Cal upper on the Military channel the other day. Badass.

I have not seen the energy numbers on that particular round yet, but I bet it bring one hell of a whallop.

Actually the 300 WSSM that olympic sells gets 308 power and velocity out of the AR-15 magazine. Short fat case for greater powder. You lose round capacity but really I don't think you'll need to hit something with a 50 WSSM twice.

the WSSM is the base case that alot of interesting wildcats are fitting in. Actually the 7 WSSM is being used by more and more competition long range shooters.

yea I looked at he 50 beowulf, the 450 bush, the 458 socom. For the wulf it's got really proprietary brass and it's low power. The WSSM case is an officially produced case with good brass availability. All you have to do is buy 7mm WSSM brass and chop it at the neck. Alot cheaper. Bullets are the same at .50 S&W.

Looks like the 50 WSSM variant(whatever they ultimately call it either .50HP or 50 OSSM or something), should outperform all three of those big bore options.
