Gretz: Merritt Signed

http://www.bobgretz.com/chiefs-footb...html#more-1436

Merritt Signed

August 25, 2008 - Bob Gretz |

The Chiefs signed their seventh-round draft choice Michael Merritt on Monday.

And then Merritt will be one of their roster moves on Tuesday to reach the NFL limit of 75 players.

Here’s how it works:

Merritt remained unsigned because he’s still recovering from a broken leg suffered at the end of his college season with the University of Central Florida. Because he could not pass a physical to participate in practice, the Chiefs decided not to tie up one of their 80 roster spots with a body that could not get on the field.

By signing him on Monday, Merritt will spend 24 hours on the active roster. That makes him eligible to be sent on Tuesday to the Non-Football Injury list. That is where he’ll likely spend the entire 2008 season, although after six weeks of the regular season, he’ll have the opportunity to practice during a three-week window. This is the same situation that Priest Holmes was in last year. After those three weeks the Chiefs can place him on the active roster, release him, or leave him on the NFI list for the rest of the season.

Although Merritt’s injury happened from playing football, it did not happen in the NFL, which is why he’s going to the NFI list instead of the Physically Unable to Perform list.

Early Monday afternoon the Chiefs were holding a personnel meeting, deciding who would be released on Monday to make room for Merritt and who will be among the moves on Tuesday to reach the NFL limit.

The move with Merritt must be made by 3 p.m. CDT on Monday.

The two other guys competing for the third TE spot stunk, so I'm all for him coming on board at some point. We surely need a blocker.

I know that 7th-round picks are usually camp fodder, but think about it. Carl Peterson spent a draft pick on a tight end with a broken leg who is going to sit out an entire year. A tight end. With a broken leg.

The only worse scenario is just as likely, which is that they didn't know he had a broken leg when they drafted him.

We have two NFL-caliber TEs. Maybe Merritt will eventually become a third as a blocker.

Maybe he fell in the draft on account of only being one-legged? If he ever gets both those legs under him, just imagine what kind of weapon we would unleash.
