Real Talk: The Defense

So I was having a conversation with a fellow Chiefs fan the other day that has had the opportunity to watch some game film from since the San Diego game. I just wanted to get some good football opinion on what he said because it makes sense to me.

Basically Earlier in the season we were screaming that our offense was vanilla and we weren't doing many "dynamic" things. In week 11 and 12 we saw a different offense, more dynamic plays and Alex throwing down the field. There were some theories that the reason the offense was so vanilla was that we weren't trying to give up the whole playbook right away.

Starting in week 12 we saw a huge departure of the defense we had come to love in the first 11 weeks. Granted some of the departure could have been due to injuries (Hali/Houston) but what interests me the most is that my friend has said that we are not blitzing or stunting as much as we were earlier in the season. I'm wondering if we are going "vanilla" on defense so that there will be less game film on what we will really do come playoff time? I know conspiracy theory, but I think it makes sense, as long as we know we can do what we did in the Raiders game and not have another San Diego game.

I didn't get a chance to watch the game yesterday, I get it Lewis is a terrible safety I have been saying that all year too, however I think that the lack of blitzing and stunting has left our secondary even more exposed than normal.

So what do the CP experts think?

Once again, your friend is wrong.

We've blitzed more post-bye than pre-bye.

I gotta say, its nice to read a thread that doesnt devolve into name calling, trolling, and whining like a bunch of 3rd graders after a few pages.

I think this has been addressed.

He's played nearly every snap this season, if not all.

Kid is gassed.

So if he is why not give Howard a chance to give him a breather or instead of bringing Hall back for the umpteenth time why not keep Powe or Love?

He did get a blocked/tipped pass, but hasn't had a sack in a long stretch. Tjack kind fell off yesterday after his great game at the skins.

Fade decided to run it up the middle and we couldnt do much about it.

I just can't wrap my head around Dorsey/Reid saying oh well lets keeping playing him and risk temporary or permanent injury because he is tired.

If it is obvious that he is tired and ineffective why just leave him in?

All I'm saying is that if kc would have sent an all out blitz and got burned v San Diego at least the offense would have had time to go score.

They have Howard listed at the backup spot, Powe and Love at one point. I mean something is better than nothing right?

Several reasons for the drop off in defensive success. We've played some better offenses, obviously. Kendrick Lewis. Teams have had time to figure us out and our weaknesses. Kendrick Lewis. Injuries. Kendrick Lewis. Fatigue. KENDRICK LEWIS.

We never should have cut Powe and we should definitely be rotating him in to lighten the load on Poe.

With the playoffs coming up and our slot pretty much set in stone we should ease up on Poe's snaps...

Denver rookie QB John Elway, on Jack Lambert, after Lambert and the Steelers knocked Elway out of his first game as a pro (1983).

They do. Playing Poe as much as we did when we are destroying the Redskins was just stupid.
