If the Chiefs go 8-8 or better 49ers get a 2nd round pick.

A third- or second-rounder from Kansas City, the remnant of the Alex Smith deal. Now it can be told: The second draft choice San Francisco will receive from the Smith deal will be K.C.'s second-rounder in 2014 if the Chiefs go 8-8 or better this season. It will be a third-rounder in 2014 if Kansas City is under .500 this season.

So: San Francisco will probably have first-, second- and four third-rounders next year. But if the Chiefs surprise, it'll more likely be a one, two twos and three threes. As we've seen, GM Trent Baalke is dangerous with extra picks in his hands. If Colin Kaepernick is very good, the Niners should be annual contenders for years with the picks laid out that way.

He was just sent packing by the only franchise he's ever taken a regular season snap for. And the Chiefs are in no rush to extend him beyond his 2 year contract.

that's because you haven't been listening. I have never one time stated that Alex Smith was a great Football player. I have always stated that he was an Average qb, a hell of a teammate, and a hell of a person. Not one time have I stated anything that could even possibly be construed as saying that Alex Smith is even a top 15 qb. People read the name Alex Smith fan and thought for some reason that I was on this Trolling bandwagon of alex smith can do no wrong.

He takes too many sacks, he is way too safe, he cant extend plays, he doesn't have the strongest arm. Those are all flaws. huge flaws.

But, at least I know the difference between, FRANCHISE qb, and Elite qbs....

. Just because Axl is employed as the starter for a franchise, does NOT make him a "franchise QB". And, I guess my definition is skewed because Payton "shit my post-season pants like clockwork" Manning's ability to be a regular season God niether impresses me or makes him "elite".

Well yes, if I were to say it like that without stating the obvious.

Like, he was sent packing for TWO SECOND ROUND PICKS, and the team that acquired him, passed on drafting a qbotf and instead signed a career back up as his back up, and Andy Reid at the introductory press conference stated he was going to help Alex Smith get to the hall of fame. And that he was replaced in San Francisco by Jim Harbaughs hand picked Franchise qb.

oh, and another little point. That Andy Reid has stated that he LOVED ALEX SMITH when he was coming out, and has tried to trade for him on multiple occasions. So no, other than that, yea, I guess just me.

How frequently do teams extend a QB with 2 years left on his contract?

You mean other than the obvious, like say JOE FLACCO just had to do, and im assuming you think hes a franchise qb, or tony Romo, who people think is a franchise qb? none, and yeah, Aaron Rodgers wasn't coming into the last year of his deal or anything.

Franchise qbs in the league right now.

Russell Wilson,
Colin Kaep,
Sam Bradford,
Matt Stafford,
Aaron Rodgers*
Jay Cutler
Drew Brees*
Cam Newton
Tony Romo,
Eli Manning
RG3
Tom Brady*
Ryan Tannenhill
Andy Dalton,
Ben Rapemeaburger
Joe Flacco
Matt Schaub,
Andrew Luck
Alex Smith,
Peyton Manning*
Phillip Rivers

That's 21 out of 32 teams that by your saying have a chance at winning the super bowl. That is 21 teams with only four having elite qbs by your measure of how many elites there are. I think personally there are six with matt ryan and eli.

Always, unless they're on their rookie contract. Do you have an answer to my question or are you drawing a blank?

So you think guys like Rodgers aren't extended til the final year because their teams are waiting to see if they are good enough for an extension?

Not often, however, this is a unique situation in that said QB is on a new team.

I think they aren't extended until their final year in the vast majority of cases. Does that mean you concede the point?
