Futurist thinking: new household appliances.

What future household appliance will have the most value to you? Feel free to propose anything, as long as you think it's reasonably feasible that it could be invented within the next 25 years.

I like the idea of a refrigerator that restocks itself by monitoring the food within, and ordering replacements as needed. I also like tiny crawling robots that do nothing but dust all day. The whole Jetsons shower and dressing machine is interesting, but I don't mind getting dressed.

For me, I'd go with an automatic washing and hanging system. Instead of me hauling my clothes back and forth between the washer and dryer and my closet, I'd like to have a closet that also serves as a washer. The closet would have two doors: inbound and outbound. When I take off my clothes at night, I toss them in the inbound door, and the closet washes and dries the clothes and folds or hangs them in the outbound area so I can just reach in and grab them each day.

A garage that comes with an automatic car wash/wax machine. And throw in an automatic vacuum system for the car as well.

Personally, I'd love to have one of those buttons that brings the upstairs downstairs, like the one Daffy tried to sell to Elmer.

I want a device that will turn off the gravity so I can get some good sleep.

Or maybe sex.

I want it to not be able to be de-activated while everyone is sleeping.

This is actually pretty cool.

I bet a lot of folks in New Orleans last year (or some other disaster that screwed up your water) wished they had one.

I like that garage system. That would be cool.

It'd also be nice to develop a heating system that knows which room I'm in, and turns the rest of the house down to the 50s while making my room comfortable. The challenge would be heating those other rooms quickly when I move.

Clothing Recycler. Every time you change your clothing you discard it into a bin where it is broken down into pulp. The pulp is cleaned and stored where it will be used to create your clothing for the next day. You can pick from a variety of weaves, styles and colors. You can create your own clothing or download patterns either from pattern enthusiasts or paysites.

Some type of body scanner in your shower. While you shower, it looks for tumors or other health problems.

I'm pretty sure a monkey could be trained to do that, maybe with the help of a dog.

With a trained monkey and a trained dog and maybe a trained bird of some kind...you could do anything.

Yeah, but then when we all got out of the shower, I'd smell like wet dog, or maybe wet monkey.

Could they help you save money on car insurance? I'm pretty sure that speech is a prerequisite for that task.

Sure, there are some bugs to work out. But we've got 25 years to get it right.
