As a woman, even I can agree with that.

It's the way I see it too. They should have thought about the same thing being used later by Republicans. Blowback.

So we're stuck with basic understanding of U.S. sexual dynamics. Women are generally more socially liberal, and less likely to rely upon logic when dealing with stressful issues, than are men. It's nothing personal for me. I just want the best odds that the choice will be reliable over the long haul.
And yet the court has maintained a conservative bend for what, 30 years? Hell, very probably more than that - I'd say since the Berger court. That's 50 years of a relatively conservative court. Is there any argument to make that the Warren Court wasn't the last truly liberal court?

The Supreme Court is not going to suddenly turn into the RNC and frankly it shouldn't. Yes, conservatives have often been nominated and then gone to the middle but they've done so to keep from having a runaway Supreme Court. Conservatives would argue that they should do exactly that but I don't think that's how most justices think. I think they WANT to play .500 ball, or at least something pretty close to it.

I think they prefer Congress and the President make most of the rules and they parse out victories to both sides. I know that's not your vision of the court and I'm not wholly convinced it's mine, but I see a justification for it.

If Roberts were appointed to the Warren Court, I don't think he'd have slid to the middle. There's no saving a hack like Sotomoyor and strict idealogues like RBG and Scalia will always be on the court. But for your more, for lack of a better term, generic Justices, they're going to move to the middle of the spectrum if they feel the court leaning one direction or the other.

As for Sexual Dynamics - I'd take Haley in a foxhole over McConnell 100 times out of 100. Large numbers may be what they are but I'm not going to dismiss anyone out of hand because of them.

Just a few points about some D's comments in that Hill link where they don't think Kennedy has done them much good in recent decisions. The same can be said of Justice Roberts for the Right. He hasn't been reliable and certainly wasn't on ACA where he allowed himself to be dissed and bullied for his original position which was actually based far more on the law. All because he didn't want the SC to appear to be in the hands of Republicans. That's not a legal justification. It's a political one and NOT his job. And he's the Chief Justice!

I don't agree.

Most 2nd and 3rd generation 'assimilated' immigrants I've known are fiercely conservative.

Catholicism, man. It calls them back every time.

I'm Secular through and through, but the Republicans had damn well better keep the evangelical wing happy because that's their in for immigrants over a long-enough timeline.

I see my point was made already.

I can only speak anecdotally, but like I said - once they're a generation or two down the road and have become part of the nation's fabric, I feel like most immigrants are staunch pro-family, pro-faith conservatives. And I think it will only get moreso as the left continues to demean anyone who favors things like the nuclear family.

Yes, but it becomes an argument of cases, not emotions, so it probably wouldn't translate well to the forum. I'll just say that, if the Court had been reliably conservative for the past 50 years, we wouldn't have federally enforced homosexual marriage, Obamacare would never have passed, we wouldn't have affirmative action still in force, and many other things would also be different. You seem to be confusing "Not as far to the left as we might be if Democrats had selected more justices" with "reliably conservative".

I'll agree with that. I have several friends who were born in Eastern Europe before the curtain fell and remember what it was like. They are all absolutely America-loving conservatives. One of them is so gung-ho that he stands for the National Anthem if he's watching a sporting event on TV.

They know first hand what happens when the communists win.
