Ben Affleck is the new Batman

Ben Affleck is the new Batman
Trey Barrineau, USA TODAY 9:27 p.m. EDT August 22, 2013
He'll replace Christian Bale in the Batman-Superman movie planned for 2015.

Ben Affleck will replace Christian Bale in the Zack Snyder-directed Batman-Superman movie that's scheduled to be released in July 2015.

Warner Bros. made the announcement on Thursday.

From the press release announcing the casting:

"Ending weeks of speculation, Ben Affleck has been set to star as Batman, a.k.a. Bruce Wayne. Affleck and filmmaker Zack Snyder will create an entirely new incarnation of the character in Snyder's as-yet-untitled project—bringing Batman and Superman together for the first time on the big screen and continuing the director's vision of their universe, which he established in Man of Steel. The announcement was made today by Greg Silverman, President, Creative Development and Worldwide Production, and Sue Kroll, President, Worldwide Marketing and International Distribution, Warner Bros. Pictures.

"Affleck will star opposite Henry Cavill, who will reprise the role of Superman/Clark Kent. The film will also reunite "Man of Steel" stars Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne and Diane Lane.

"In the announcement, Silverman stated, 'We knew we needed an extraordinary actor to take on one of DC Comics' most enduringly popular Super Heroes, and Ben Affleck certainly fits that bill, and then some. His outstanding career is a testament to his talent and we know he and Zack will bring new dimension to the duality of this character.'

"Snyder also expressed his excitement about the casting of Affleck, noting, 'Ben provides an interesting counter-balance to Henry's Superman. He has the acting chops to create a layered portrayal of a man who is older and wiser than Clark Kent and bears the scars of a seasoned crime fighter, but retain the charm that the world sees in billionaire Bruce Wayne. I can't wait to work with him.'

"Kroll added, 'We are so thrilled that Ben is continuing Warner Bros.' remarkable legacy with the character of Batman. He is a tremendously gifted actor who will make this role his own in this already much-anticipated pairing of these two beloved heroes.'

Affleck has previous experience as a superhero -- he played Daredevil in the 2003 film of the same name.

Affleck's Batman will be 'tired, weary and seasoned' says WB Exec

(CBR) Not everybody is happy with Ben Affleck playing DC Comics icon Batman in 2015's "Man of Steel" sequel, but the actor/director has a very important fan: Warner Bros. CEO Kevin Tsujihara, who was quoted by The Hollywood Reporter as saying, "Ben is perfect for the vision [director Zack Snyder] has for that character."

Speaking at a investors conference on Thursday, Tsujihara acknowledged the vocally negative reaction following the initial announcement last month, reportedly saying, "The fact that you saw such a passionate response in the blogosphere is really kind of a testament to the love that people have for this character."

Tsujihara also gave some early insight into the film, with Deadline quoting the executive as saying Affleck's Batman will be "kind of tired and weary and seasoned and been doing it for a while."

More DC-related announcements are coming, according to Tsujihara. "DC really does touch a lot of parts of our business and is an important part of the strategy in how we're going to grow going forward," he's quoted in THR's report.

The "Man of Steel" sequel will be the first live-action film to pair both Superman and Batman, with Henry Cavill reprising his "Man of Steel" lead role. Directed by Zack Snyder and written by David S. Goyer, the film is scheduled for release on July 17, 2015.

Great, this is gonna cause another mass shooting at a Batman movie premiere. At least this one will be justified.

Honestly, I don't think it matter too much who actually plays Batman, I mean it matters a little. But the director is the most important thing in these movies. I'll reserve judgement until I see it. People were pissed about Heath Ledger being the Joker and that turned out to be some of the greatest acting we've ever seen.

Did you know that the scene where Joker has a camera in hand and announces to Gotham that Batman needs to take off his mask and reveal himself or he would kill a person every day, evidently, was Ledger's audition for the Joker role. Ledger came up with the makeup and costume for that role, himself, as well. Just heard that yesterday and thought it was pretty cool.

Source, plox. Everything I've read indicates that Nolan long had Ledger in mind for the casting, even before Ledger knew how he'd portray the Joker.

Yeah, he actually approached Ledger about playing Batman, to which he replied something to the effect of he would never want to do a superhero movie.
