-- My car's timing chain snapped two weeks ago

The Audi's timing chain went about two weeks ago - Oddly it happened after the dealer had it (the next morning from getting it back, actually) - It really doesn't matter - you have no legs vs. a dealer and besides they'd have to dissect the engine to access that area. So in this case I actually do think it was just a mere coincidence.

Anyhow; ?? I'm wondering if anyone has recovered a vehicle from this timing chain issue ?? - again it's an 06 Audi A4 3.2

I bought a really fast vehicle & all - but black'ey can't be buried yet.

anyone else gone through this? I forget the details regarding the engine's structural assembly. There are two types - one where you're basically in a repairable situation or two - you're ****ed.

Help

Please....

When I was in high school, you could find used Spitfires all over for under $1000. I looked at more than one but couldn't pull the trigger because I couldn't afford the insurance.

Ha! I used the same joke in 1980 but it was a porsche. The candy nuts driving the thing didn't think it was funny.

were you driving the car when this happened? Or, did you just start it up, put it in gear and then it just shut down?

Even though its an expensive engine with all the bells and whistles, if you weren't actually driving the car, you might, might be able to fix it. However, you'd have to tear the engine down to find out. Either way, that is, entirely replacing the engine or seeing of the current power plant is salvageable, your gonna be in it for some $.

That's the thing about German cars, they are real, real expensive to work on.

then see if you can fix it. You should be able to call any Audi mechanic and get an estimate. Be sure and talk to multiple AUDI mechanics. If all of them tell you the same thing, that is, the engine "could" be repaired then you might go that route. However, if all of them tell you to just replace the engine, then you can get an estimate for that too. You will probably get a little of both or an "I have no idea until I break the engine down and that will cost you XXXX."

You can get a used engine from a salvage yard. This is what the interwebz is for. Yah know?

People who say....I don't know until I break the engine down are probably ripping you off. Why? Because for valve to piston contact they should be able to pull the spark plugs and drop a flexible scope down to look inside the cylinders. They can see if the cylinders are trashed.

The chain actually broke or he dropped a valve it's really not repairable or at least it would cost more than a salvage motor and be less reliable. Even it idle it still revs enough to smoke the motor. The only exception would be if it's not actually broken but the timing is off and the valves have just been bent. That *might* be repairable...but even then it's no sure thing there may be more subtle damage to the valve seats/pistons etc that can crop up later.
