If i'm using a first round pick on a wr, he better damn well be of the Calvin Johnson type, especially with an early first round pick.

I don't get why people think Orton is such a terrible quarterback, when he has never ever thrown to a wr corps that is worth a shit.

Matt Cassel isn’t going anywhere

Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on February 7, 2012, 1:11 PM EST

AP
When the 2011 season ended, it was worth wondering if Matt Cassel was a lock to return to the Chiefs. It’s not worth wondering anymore.

Romeo Crennel seems to want a competition at quarterback, but his statements have indicated that Cassel will be part of that competition. New offensive coordinator Brian Daboll supported that notion Tuesday.

“A have a lot of confidence in Matt Cassel. I’ve watched him on tape and I know the player,” Daboll said via Josh Looney of KCChiefs.com.

Keeping Cassel makes sense. With Crennel in charge, the Chiefs are hoping to maintain as much continuity as possible. Cassel is “only” due $5.25 million this year after costing much more in previous years.

We wouldn’t be surprised to see the Chiefs bring back Kyle Orton or bring in a quality rookie to compete with Cassel. But Cassel remains the heavy favorite to be the Week 1 starter.

We need to create as a fanbase a qb controversy like Denver did.

I just don't understand how they can watch how he actually played and hate him this badly.

The guy was legit. He made protection adjustments and called out assignments. He went all the way through his progressions and used the entire field. He was able to move around in the pocket while still keeping his eyes downfield.

Ignore every single statistic he generated if you want (though they were pretty damn good), the fact is that the guy simply played like a quality NFL quarterback here. He did all the things that you ask a QB to do and he did them pretty well.

It just doesn't make sense - the guy does a lot of things very well.

By no means is saying that I would bring Orton back the same as saying I don't care if we have a star QB.

There isn't a QB worth taking at 11 in this draft, there just isn't. If you take Tannehill at 11, you're worse shape for 2013 than you would by simply taking Bray, Wilson or Murray in 2012. Tannehill is so damn raw that he'd get absolutely abused this year anyway and you'd be looking at having your QBOTF a little shell-shocked, but hopefully ready to go in 2013.

OR you could draft a QB in 2012 when you're going to have a significantly better QB draft. There will be 5 QBs in the draft next year that are better than the #3 QB in this season's draft.

Quit talking past people - you can do everything you want to do in chasing a franchise QB while also getting a guy like Orton that can absolutely help you win now.

Despite the fact that the Planet thinks Cassel is the worst QB in the league, he can get you 8+ wins. Same with Orton.

This franchise has not taken a QB when they were worse off than with an 8 win QB. Saying Orton doesn't stop them from going for a QB in 2013, is, IMO, wrong and goes against the sad franchise tradition. 8+ wins puts people in the seats and gives an easy excuse to keep improving at "other positions".

I also hate the constant "next year's QB class is better ...." mentality. I've listened to the same excuses year-after-year-after-year.

Barkley and Jones will come out. I like RGIII over both of them. Unless Jones exhibits some magnificent improvement this year, I wouldn't touch him in the first. That leaves you with 3-4 guys that you HOPE declare. Bray could get hurt again and easily go back to school another year. In fact, he played poorly after returning from injury, IIRC. The kid from Arkansas and Washington look promising, but so did guys like Snead entering their final year. You never know what's going to happen.

My solution is to make a big move for Griffin.

Bray and Murray are going to be juniors. There's nothing to stop them from being next years Barkley and Jones.

Steve Smith from the Panthers work for you? That's starting to be the comparison.

Sorry on the order. I was just typing in the order I thought of the names for both teams.

And I'm not advocating WR in the first. Just his talent... if it turns ot to bbe Steve Smith after the combine... at #11 or #12 seems like a better deal to me than reaching for some other position.

Orton is a raspberry flavored turd. Might taste better than pure turd ala Cassel but whats the point? 8-8 9-7 and hope to get lucky in the tournament?

Awesome plan Carl. It worked well for you.

Once you get down to the 15, you can lean hard on that 2-headed monster in the backfield. And moving between the 20s keeps your defense off the field to boot. Suddenly your defense has improved a great deal as well.

Moving between he 20's may be all it takes to take the Chiefs from an 8 win team to the best team in football that doesn't have a superstar QB (that includes the Ravens, 49ers and Falcons). From there, we can continue to look for the star QB.

I don't see what's farfetched or unreasonable about any of that.

I love that everyone is so mad Cassel is still the QB. Who have we passed on that has turned out better than him so far? We haven't had a chance to grab an elite QB. They are rare for a reason.

I think it is the fact that Palko did things mentally that Cassel can't do, and Orton did both mentally and physically things that Cassel can't do. Dude got exposed when he went down.
